As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a golden hue across the secluded stretch of coast in Costa Rica, Chandler Brownlee stood on the rocks, Bible in hand, gazing out at the waves that have drawn surfers from around the world. But for Mr. Brownlee, the pursuit here goes far beyond catching the perfect swell; it’s about connecting with fellow surfers on a spiritual level, inviting them to explore their faith in Jesus Christ. At 52, Mr. Brownlee is a multifaceted individual—a real estate agent, wildlife conservationist, father of three, former Baptist minister, and passionate surfer. His dual identity positions him as a senior member of Christian Surfers, an international organization dedicated to merging the love of surfing with faith. With over 175 chapters across 35 countries, the organization engages with beachgoers and surfers alike, hoping to bridge the natural connection surfers feel with the ocean and the divine. This year, the organization expanded its reach by establishing a chapter in Pavones, a small town renowned for its exceptional surfing, particularly its second-largest left-hand wave in the world. For Mr. Brownlee, the isolation and rustic charm of Pavones attract those committed to the surfing lifestyle—individuals he believes may also be seeking deeper meaning in their lives. During a casual encounter with three sunburned Canadian surfers camping in a beat-up RV, Mr. Brownlee’s jovial nature shone through. His laughter and laid-back demeanor embodied the spirit of the group’s outreach—one that emphasizes companionship and shared experiences over heavy-handed proselytizing. Instead of traditional methods, they opt for organic conversations sparked by a shared love of the ocean. Christian Surfers seeks to create an atmosphere where surfers feel comfortable exploring their spiritual side without the intimidation often associated with organized religion. Its motto, "a bridge from the beach to the church," encapsulates this approach. The organization provides resources that resonate with surfers, featuring a unique edition of the "Surfers' Bible" adorned with imagery of waves rather than religious symbols. The organization’s grassroots efforts provide a welcoming space where individuals can belong "before they believe." Family members, such as Kyle and Dennis Leon in Esterillos Oeste, exemplify this mission. The Leons host gatherings where young surfers can enjoy food, watch surf videos, and engage in Bible study in a relaxed, non-traditional setting. Stripped of the usual formalities of a church environment, their home is a sanctuary where conversations flow easily and the atmosphere is permeated with camaraderie. As Mr. Leon leads discussions that draw parallels between surfing and scripture, he emphasizes the relatable nature of faith, illustrating how figures like the Apostle Paul can inspire even the most adventurous and free-spirited individuals. The aim is not to coerce but to inspire, allowing those present to contemplate spirituality in their own time. This mission is particularly vital in a region like Costa Rica, where the surf culture is rich, and the quest for self-discovery often leads to alternative spiritual practices. Mr. Brownlee acknowledges this reality, proposing a shift in focus from trendy rituals to the warmth and acceptance found in the Christian faith. The Leons' gatherings reflect the organization's broader vision—creating a community where surfers can find not only the thrill of riding waves but also a deeper connection to themselves and to something greater. As they closed the evening with a prayer of gratitude for shared experiences, their home resonated with laughter and a sense of belonging that embodies the spirit of Pura Vida—the essence of living life to the fullest, in body and spirit. Amid the vibrant surf culture and the allure of the perfect wave, Christian Surfers continue their unique mission, inviting individuals to explore a faith that is as expansive as the ocean itself. And in the setting sun of Costa Rica, the promise of both surf and spirit remains woven together, waiting for those willing to embrace it.
