Hyderabad: A recent report from the World Health Organisation (WHO) has raised alarming concerns about the rising number of chikungunya cases in India, particularly spotlighting Telangana. The WHO South East Asia Region Epidemiological Bulletin indicates that the state is experiencing a resurgence in chikungunya infections this year, marking a stark contrast to the decline observed over the previous three years. Telangana's chikungunya case count has surged dramatically in 2024, skyrocketing from just 10 cases last year to 480 cases this year. This significant increase is particularly striking when compared to the data from previous years; the state recorded only 20 cases in 2020, a mere 15 in 2021, and 10 last year. The current numbers reflect a troubling trend, as the region had previously seen over 1,000 cases in 2019 and around 500 cases in 2018. The WHO report notes that several other states have also experienced notable increases in chikungunya cases, including Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, and Uttarakhand. The proximity of Telangana to Andhra Pradesh, which has been severely impacted, has likely contributed to the state's own rise in infections. Maharashtra leads the chart with nearly 5,000 cases reported, followed closely by Karnataka with 2,000 and Rajasthan with 500 cases. Telangana now ranks among the top five states for chikungunya cases in the country, a worrying development that public health officials are closely monitoring. Health experts have reported that the symptoms associated with chikungunya this year have proven to be more challenging to manage. Dr. Kiran Madhala, a health expert, noted that the length of illness has increased, with patients suffering from symptoms that last for months. This year, many cases have required steroid treatments, complicating the management of the disease and placing additional strain on healthcare resources. The resurgence of chikungunya raises critical questions about the effectiveness of public health measures in controlling mosquito populations, which are the primary vectors for the disease. As the monsoon season approaches, the potential for further outbreaks necessitates urgent action from health authorities to mitigate the risks and protect vulnerable populations. Public awareness campaigns on preventive measures, including eliminating stagnant water where mosquitoes breed, wearing protective clothing, and using mosquito repellents, are essential in combatting this rising health threat. The community must also be vigilant about reporting symptoms early and seeking medical attention to help manage and contain the spread of chikungunya. As the situation develops, the focus must remain on rigorous surveillance, timely interventions, and community engagement to curtail the rising tide of chikungunya infections in Telangana and across India.
