The former Peruvian presidential candidate Keiko Fujimori has spoken out against the accusations of illegal campaign contributions made against her, stating that the funds in question came from lawful sources. In a preliminary investigation, she claimed that it has been demonstrated that the contributions originated from prestigious individuals and businessmen in Peru, and were not illicitly obtained.
Regarding the allegations that the construction company Odebrecht illegally contributed 1.2 million dollars to her 2011 campaign, Fujimori emphasized that both Marcelo Odebrecht and Jorge Barata, representatives of the company, have denied any knowledge of such contributions being made to her. She reiterated these denials in an interview with Canal N, asserting that she did not receive any illegal funds for her campaign.
Despite facing a criminal process and enduring multiple instances of preventive detention over the past eight years, Fujimori expressed strength and solidarity with the more than 40 individuals accused in the case, including leaders of her political party Fuerza Popular, her lawyer, and her ex-husband. She criticized the prosecutors for what she believes to be a politically motivated attempt to damage her image and eliminate Fujimorism from the political landscape.
Fujimori acknowledged that her electoral campaigns involved a mix of private fundraising activities and public contributions received by political parties. While she refrained from disclosing the exact amount raised through private events, she stated that this information would be provided during the trial. As for her future political aspirations, she remained undecided about running for public office in the 2026 general elections.
When asked about the prospect of her father, former president Alberto Fujimori, potentially running for office in 2026, Keiko Fujimori expressed admiration for his clarity and knowledge of the country. She noted that her father's recent registration with Fuerza Popular had generated enthusiasm within the party, but the final decision on his candidacy would be determined by party authorities. Alberto Fujimori, who was released from prison in 2017 and is set to undergo hip surgery following a recent fall at his home, remains in good spirits as he continues his battle against tongue cancer.
Keiko Fujimori condemned the 2009 conviction for crimes against humanity handed down against her father as unjust and lacking evidence. She defended his legacy as president and expressed hope for his political involvement in the upcoming elections. While uncertainty looms over her own political future and her father's potential candidacy, the Fujimori family remains a prominent and controversial figure in Peruvian politics.
