In a troubling development in a listeria outbreak linked to Boar's Head deli meats, health officials have confirmed the third death associated with the contamination, bringing the total number of sickened individuals to 43. The latest fatality occurred in Virginia, as reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Thursday. Previous deaths were recorded in New Jersey and Illinois. Since the CDC's last update on July 31, the outbreak, which began in late May, has seen nine additional cases emerge. The source of the contamination was traced back to a liverwurst sample collected in Maryland that tested positive for listeria. Following this finding, New York health officials conducted their own tests on a liverwurst sample, confirming the presence of the same strain of listeria bacteria. In response to the outbreak, Boar's Head expanded its recall to include a staggering 7 million pounds of deli meats on July 30. This recall initially began on July 25, and it encompasses over 70 products, such as liverwurst, ham, beef salami, and bologna, all produced at the company's facility in Jarratt, Virginia. These products were distributed not just across the United States but also reached international markets, including the Cayman Islands, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Panama. As the situation continues to develop, Boar's Head is facing legal repercussions, with two lawsuits already filed—one in a Missouri court and the other a class action suit in federal court in New York. As the CDC works to track and contain the outbreak, consumers are being urged to avoid any recalled products. Those who may have purchased these items are advised to discard them or return them to the store for a full refund. Health officials emphasize the importance of food safety, particularly with listeria, which can persist and thrive even in refrigerated environments. Individuals who have had these products in their homes are also advised to thoroughly clean and sanitize their refrigerators to prevent any potential cross-contamination. As the investigation continues and additional cases may arise, the CDC remains at the forefront, providing updates and guidance to the public. The seriousness of this outbreak highlights the critical nature of food safety and the potential risks associated with deli meats.
