A new Tropical Cyclone named Berly is approaching Mexico, bringing with it the remnants of Cyclone Chris, Low-Pressure Systems, the monsoonal trough, a dry line, polar and subtropical jet streams. According to the forecast from the National Meteorological Service (SMN) of the National Water Commission (Conagua), cool temperatures are expected in Mexican territory, as well as heavy rains, hailstorms, winds exceeding 90 km/h, dust storms, and whirlwinds, with the aim of mitigating the intense heat that has prevailed in the country in previous days. While the remnants of Tropical Storm Chris move through the country, the SMN is closely monitoring Hurricane Berly, which is currently off the coast of Yucatán as a category 3 storm. It is expected that this week the new Tropical Cyclone will intensify and head towards the Yucatán coast, causing adverse weather conditions in the region. For today, Tropical Depression Chris is expected to move over the central part of the country, interacting with a low-pressure channel extending over the Sierra Madre Occidental and the Central Plateau, which will cause showers and heavy rains in the states of the Northern Plateau, center, and east of the territory, including the Valley of Mexico. Additionally, torrential rains are expected in some areas such as San Luis Potosí, Jalisco, Colima, and Hidalgo. Furthermore, winds with gusts of 50 to 70 km/h, waves 1 to 3 meters high, and possible waterspouts are forecasted on the coasts of Tamaulipas and Veracruz. A low-pressure channel over southeastern Mexico and the Yucatán Peninsula, interacting with the monsoonal trough near the coasts of the Mexican South Pacific, will cause heavy rains in Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo, and intense rains in Oaxaca and Chiapas. Moreover, a low-pressure channel from the north of the Gulf of California to Baja California Sur, in combination with instability at high atmospheric levels, will generate showers in the Baja California Peninsula and heavy rains in the northwest of the territory. Strong wind gusts are expected in some inland areas. The heavy to torrential rains could be accompanied by electrical discharges, intense wind gusts, and hail, which could cause floods, landslides, and waterlogging, as well as an increase in river and stream levels in various regions of the country. On Tuesday, the formation of a low-pressure area is expected south of the Guerrero coast, which will move towards Michoacán, Colima, and Jalisco. Interacting with the monsoonal trough, very heavy to intense rains are anticipated in states in the west, south, and southeast of the country, as well as showers and heavy rains in the central region. On the other hand, a new tropical wave will move south of the Yucatán Peninsula and southeastern Mexico, causing showers and heavy rains in those areas. Low-pressure channels will extend over various regions of the country, which, combined with upper-level divergence and moisture influx, will result in heavy to very heavy showers and rains in the mentioned localities. By Thursday, Hurricane Berly is expected to approach the Yucatán Peninsula, increasing the probability of heavy rains and intense winds in that region. Several rainfall forecasts have been issued for different areas of Mexico, with amounts ranging from intense to torrential in various entities of the country. Regarding temperatures, a warm to hot environment is expected in the northwest and north of the country, with temperatures exceeding 40°C in areas of Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua, and Sinaloa. In contrast, minimum temperatures of 0 to 5°C are forecasted in Durango, State of Mexico, and Puebla. It is important to remember that a tropical cyclone is a powerful atmospheric storm characterized by a low-pressure system, strong winds, and intense rains that form over tropical oceans. These systems feed off the heat of the ocean water and originate in areas where sea surface temperatures are high. Tropical cyclones can have devastating consequences, including destructive winds, storm surges, and heavy precipitation, which can lead to floods, landslides, and severe damage to infrastructure and property. Therefore, it is essential to follow the warnings and recommendations of meteorological services and local authorities during the hurricane or tropical cyclone season. A hurricane, on the other hand, is an extremely powerful and destructive tropical cyclone that forms over warm ocean waters, generally in regions near the equator. These storms are characterized by sustained winds of at least 119 km/h and can cause significant damage in the affected areas. The Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale is used to classify the intensity of hurricanes based on wind speed and their potential effects on land. This scale has five categories ranging from mild hurricanes to catastrophic hurricanes, determined by wind speed and potential destruction they can cause. It is essential to be prepared and take necessary precautions to minimize risks and ensure safety during hurricane or tropical cyclone situations. Stay informed, prepare emergency supplies, reinforce your home, plan evacuation routes, and follow the instructions of authorities to protect lives and integrity during these weather events. Remember that prevention and preparedness are essential to face and mitigate the impacts of these natural phenomena on the population.
