Ukraine has started the year 2025 under an intense wave of violence, with a massive drone attack launched by Russia taking place on the morning of the first day of the year. At seven in the morning, alarm sirens began to sound in Kyiv, heralding an attack that, although anticipated, has caused deep shock among the citizens. The capital has been the epicenter of this assault, although other regions of the country were also impacted. This attack has left a trail of destruction and pain, with at least two dead, one of them a pregnant woman, and numerous injured.

The head of the Military Administration of the Kyiv Region, Timur Pkachenko, has reported on the devastating extent of the attack. In the Sviatoshin and Pecherski districts, significant material damage and loss of life have been recorded. In Pecherski, an area that houses important governmental institutions, residents experienced moments of panic. Explosions echoed through the neighborhood, disrupting the tranquility typically felt during New Year's celebrations. Emergency services were quickly deployed to attend to the injured and search for possible victims trapped among the rubble.

President Volodymyr Zelensky has strongly condemned the attack, pointing out that Russia's desire to inflict harm on Ukraine does not pause even on holidays. On his social media, Zelensky expressed his outrage and emphasized the resilience of his people in the face of aggression. This attack is merely a continuation of the violence that has marked the Russian invasion since it began in 2022, which has had a significant impact on the daily lives of Ukrainians.

This is not the first time Russia has launched an airstrike on holidays. Just days earlier, on December 25, Ukraine faced another attack with 78 missiles and 106 drones. This pattern of aggression has created an atmosphere of constant alert and anxiety among the population, who have become accustomed to living under the threat of new assaults. During the first part of Wednesday's attack, 63 of the 111 launched drones were intercepted, but the debris from those that were shot down also resulted in significant damage and injuries on the ground.

The impact of the attacks has not only been physical; it has also left a psychological mark on the citizens. The victims, ranging from men to elderly women, have suffered shrapnel wounds, bruises, and in many cases, acute anxiety that requires psychological attention. The war has transformed the daily lives of Ukrainians, forcing them to confront not only the immediate danger but also the emotional trauma that accompanies such events.

In the affected Pecherski neighborhood, daily life has been abruptly interrupted. The military checkpoints that normally regulate access to this area have been reinforced, limiting citizens' mobility. Some, like Maria, have experienced moments of terror hearing nearby explosions while trying to continue with their activities. Her testimony reveals the fragility of peace on a day that should have been one of celebration.

In addition to Kyiv, other districts like Sviatoshin have also suffered damage. A non-residential building has been set on fire, and the tram tracks in the area have been affected. The testimonies of those who were present during the attack underscore the fear and confusion that have seized the population. Life in the country has changed radically, and each explosion reminds citizens of the reality of a war that seems endless.

The context of the attack becomes even more significant considering that it occurred at a critical moment: Ukraine has decided to cut off Russian gas supplies to Europe, marking a new phase in the tension between the two countries. This decision, along with Zelensky's New Year message about Ukraine's aspiration to join NATO, indicates that the conflict will continue, with Russia determined to maintain its aggression and Ukraine committed to its defense and sovereignty.

Russia's aggressiveness towards Ukraine on holidays highlights a lack of regard for human life and the stability of the region. While the world watches, Ukrainians face the harsh reality of war, which has become a constant aspect of their daily existence. With the start of a new year, the pain and determination of this people resonate above the roar of the drones, showing the world their unyielding will to resist adversity.
