With the start of January, we welcome Veganuary 2025, an initiative that invites reflection on our food choices and their impact on the world. This international campaign, celebrating its second year in Spain, has managed to attract the attention of millions of people worldwide, and this year, its effects are expected to be even more significant. According to estimates from the NGO Veganuary, over 25 million people gave up animal products in January 2024, and the goal is to surpass this number in the new year. One of the new features of this edition is the participation of well-known figures from the entertainment industry who have committed to supporting veganism. Among them is actress Teresa Riott, famous for her role in the series 'Valeria'. In her statements, Riott emphasizes the power that individuals have to transform the world through their food choices. "Changing your diet brings countless improvements to the lives of animals. We can decide; they cannot," the actress points out, highlighting the responsibility we all share in this regard. The roster of Veganuary ambassadors in Spain has grown to include other actresses like Clara Lago and Núria Gago, as well as renowned comedians like Dani Rovira and David Pareja, who have decided to use their influence to promote a more ethical and sustainable diet. The campaign also includes the participation of Emma García, the world runner-up in artistic swimming, who uses her popularity to spread the Veganuary message. This year's campaign carries the slogan "Weird?", aiming to challenge preconceived notions about veganism by directly addressing common practices in the food industry. Through social media and outdoor advertising, Veganuary highlights how these practices cause suffering to animals and contribute to pollution and deforestation of the planet. In this regard, the NGO points out unsettling truths: cows produce milk for their young in the same way that humans do, and livestock farming is a key factor in global deforestation. Amanda Romero, director of Veganuary Spain, notes that this campaign seeks to encourage people to confront the reality of how our food choices affect both animals and the environment. “Perhaps this way, considering trying veganism during the month of January will seem a little less weird,” suggests Romero, inviting reflection. A highlighted aspect of Veganuary is its focus on gastronomy. Many mistakenly believe that a vegan diet lacks flavor, but the reality is that it can be both delicious and healthy. To demonstrate this, the initiative offers a range of recipes, many of which are shared by celebrities and influencers. This year, Núria Gago proposes a Ramen with tofu and shiitake mushrooms, while Dani Rovira offers a vegan version of Kebab. Emma García, for her part, suggests irresistible pancakes with peanut butter and berries. Participation in Veganuary is free and open to all. Those who wish to join the cause can register on the official website and access the Celebrity Recipe Book, the Official Starter Kit, and 31 days of newsletters that include recipes, practical tips, and nutritional information to facilitate the transition to a vegan diet. Since its establishment in 2014, Veganuary has seen impressive growth. What began as a simple challenge in a kitchen in Yorkshire, UK, has transformed into a global campaign, with a presence in countries such as the USA, Germany, Argentina, India, Australia, Brazil, and many more. This growth reflects a shift in public perception of veganism and sustainability and highlights the increasing demand for ethical alternatives in food. The importance of initiatives like Veganuary becomes more evident every day, not only for their contribution to animal welfare but also for their role in the fight against climate change. Encouraging people to reconsider their eating habits is a step towards a more sustainable future. This January, the invitation is open: are you daring enough to discover a new lifestyle that could benefit the planet and its inhabitants?
