Certificado psicosomático: ¿Suficiente para evaluar aptitud mental en solicitud de licencia de porte y uso de armas de fuego?
Sucamec, the National Superintendence of Control of Security Services, Firearms, Ammunition, and Explosives for Civil Use, has announced that a psychosomatic certificate or mental health certificate is now required to apply for a license to carry and use firearms. This document must be issued by health centers and clinics authorized by the Ministry of Health, who will assess the physical, mental, and behavioral abilities of the applicant. Sucamec has made it clear that they respect these certificates issued by approved centers and rely on the principle of truthfulness.
However, concerns have been raised that this psychosomatic test may not be sufficient to detect disorders that require treatment before granting a firearms license. Specialists in psychiatric issues have pointed out that this test focuses on assessing physical, mental, and motor coordination skills, but it is not capable of detecting behavioral alterations that could be a risk factor in firearms handling.
This news highlights the importance of ensuring that individuals obtaining firearms licenses meet the necessary requirements, including mental health evaluations. It is crucial for the certificates issued by authorized centers to be rigorous and cover all relevant aspects to determine a person's suitability to possess and use firearms safely.
