The province of Almería has been struck by a new Isolated Depression at High Levels (DANA), which has left a trail of flooding and material damage in multiple municipalities. According to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), rainfall has reached up to 70 liters per square meter in a matter of minutes, causing rivers and streams to overflow, creating a critical situation in towns such as Aguadulce, Roquetas de Mar, El Ejido, and Balanegra. Images circulating on social media show impressive currents of water capable of sweeping away vehicles and flooding roads like the A-7, one of the most important arteries in the area. The Meteorological Association of the Southeast (Ametse) has emphasized that the southern area of the Gador mountain range, in the municipality of Dalias, has been particularly affected, recording intense rainfall that has led the Emergency Coordination Center (Cecem112) to receive multiple calls for help. The main impacts have concentrated in the aforementioned municipalities, where the distress and concern of residents have increased as water accumulated in the streets and homes. The mayor of Balanegra, Nuria Rodríguez, described the scene as alarming, revealing that the water was coming from the municipality of Dalías and caused a significant rise in two streams that cross her town. Although it was not raining with the same intensity in Balanegra, the initial fear of overflow has eased as levels have begun to drop. However, material damage is evident, especially on rural roads and access paths to the streams. On the other hand, the mayor of Dalías, Francisco Lirola, reported that after the most intense hours of rain, the situation has improved considerably. Although the municipality remains on orange alert, rainfall has decreased and is now reduced to drizzles. Lirola highlighted that the construction of a containment pond has played a crucial role in preventing further flooding in agricultural areas, although he warned that approximately 20 hectares have been affected. In response to the emergency situation, local protection plans have been activated in several municipalities, including Roquetas de Mar. Authorities have urged citizens to take extreme precautions, suggesting limiting travel and avoiding areas prone to flooding. Residents have been advised to stay in their homes if possible, as the weather phenomenon could worsen. Aemet has updated weather warnings, raising the alert level from yellow to orange in the western Almeria region and the city of Almería. This alert will remain active until 20:59 hours, with expectations of up to 40 mm of additional rain within the next hour. The possibility of storms has also been reported, increasing the risk of flooding. For its part, the Junta de Andalucía has taken preventive actions by activating the Special Emergency Plan for Flood Risk in Andalusia (PERI), in a pre-emergency phase. This measure aims to coordinate efforts to mitigate the effects of heavy rainfall and protect the population. With the situation still developing, authorities continue to assess the extent of the damage and the impact on local infrastructure. Municipal representatives have called for calm, emphasizing that although the situation is serious, emergency plans are in place, and all necessary measures are being taken to ensure the safety of citizens. The community is showing resilience in the face of another adverse weather event, reminding everyone of their ability to come together and face adversity. The population of Almería has once again demonstrated its strength in the face of difficult natural circumstances. This event serves as a reminder of the importance of preparation and collaboration between authorities and citizens to tackle extreme weather phenomena that, unfortunately, seem to be increasingly frequent. Attention is now focused on recovery and ensuring that material damage does not become a burden for the community's development.
