The Peruvian political landscape is preparing for a new electoral cycle as the general election of 2026 approaches. Starting this year, Peruvians will have the opportunity to elect their representatives for the presidency, as well as for the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate. This is a juncture that will not only redefine the political future of the country but will also require a critical analysis of the candidates who present themselves and the proposals they offer. In a context of political instability that has persisted for nearly a decade, citizens face the task of rigorously evaluating who will be responsible for guiding the country's destiny. The most important lesson we must draw from the turbulent recent history is the necessity of being adequately informed about the candidates vying for these positions. Often, electoral campaigns are inundated with grandiose promises that lack a solid foundation. It is vital for voters to ask not only what they propose but also how they plan to carry out their plans and what their approach will be regarding crucial issues such as private investment, which has proven to be an essential driver for economic growth and poverty alleviation. It is fundamental to maintain a critical stance towards proposals that, while they may sound attractive, lack solid technical backing. Proposals such as price controls or political intervention in key institutions, like the Central Reserve Bank, not only pose economic risks but also threaten the stability that has taken so long to achieve. The independence of these institutions is a pillar that we must protect to ensure a healthy economic environment. Despite the challenges, it is possible to build on past experiences. The next government should aspire to improve access to essential services such as health, education, and security. In this sense, collaboration with the private sector can be a powerful tool. Projects like tax-funded works and programs that promote digitalization are examples of how the private sector can contribute to social development. The synergy between both sectors can generate effective solutions to deeply rooted problems in Peruvian society. Moreover, it is crucial for political leaders to recognize the value of private enterprise as a strategic ally. For its part, the business sector must actively commit to the country's development, offering solutions to the problems faced by the population. This type of collaboration can result in a significant impact on the quality of life of citizens and in creating a conducive environment for investment. Institutional strength is another aspect that should not be overlooked. Promoting practices that ensure the effectiveness of political organizations is essential for strengthening democracy. A robust and efficient justice system is also indispensable for generating trust, both among citizens and potential investors. Only through strong institutions can sustainable and long-term development be achieved. The political debate next year should not only focus on the elections but also on addressing structural problems that have persisted in the country. Labor informality remains one of the most pressing issues, affecting a large sector of the population. Reducing bureaucratic barriers and providing information about the formalization process are necessary steps to foster a fairer and more equitable labor environment. The current moment demands that all actors in society take an active role in building the future of Peru. Now is the time to advocate for ideas that prioritize individual freedom, sustainable economic development, and poverty reduction. This joint effort between the State, businesses, and civil society is crucial for building a more prosperous country with equitable opportunities. The responsibility falls on each citizen to reflect on the decisions they will make in the upcoming elections. To whom the political future of the country is entrusted will largely determine the direction Peru will take in the coming years. The opportunity is in sight; it remains to be decided whether we take the path towards a hopeful future or repeat the mistakes of the past. A deep reflection on whom we entrust with the reins of our country will undoubtedly be a good first step towards the scenario we all wish to build.
