As the holiday season approaches, shopping centers across the nation transform into festive wonderlands, and a crucial part of this experience is the role of Santa's helpers. These unsung heroes work tirelessly behind the scenes, ensuring that every child who visits Santa leaves with a smile and a cherished memory. James North, affectionately known as "Jolly James," is a seasoned Santa's helper who has spent the last seven years working for the Santa photography company Scene to Believe. His role as Set Experience Manager for the Hervey Bay set involves overseeing a team of ten helpers, along with Santa himself. With the holiday season in full swing, North shared insights into what it’s really like to don the festive garb and spread holiday cheer. Preparation for the bustling holiday season begins much earlier than one might think. According to North, the groundwork starts in October, long before Santa takes his seat. The helpers undergo training sessions and team-building activities to ensure they are ready for the chaos that is to come. North noted, "No two days are exactly the same," but Saturdays tend to be the busiest, drawing in families eager to capture the moment with Santa. To get into the spirit, North and his fellow helpers "Christmasfy" their uniforms, adding festive touches like Christmas-themed braces to their standard red attire. The work involves a variety of tasks, from greeting families and snapping photos to managing the printing station. North's primary responsibility is to guarantee a seamless experience for visitors, making sure there are plenty of gifts and printing supplies available. Despite the joyful atmosphere, the job can be an emotional rollercoaster. North explained that while many interactions are filled with laughter and joy, there are also poignant moments that remind them of the challenges some families face during the holidays. Helpers often welcome visitors who are coping with loss or difficult life circumstances, making it imperative that they create a magical experience for everyone. The children bring their own unique challenges; capturing the perfect photo can be a hurdle, especially with younger kids who may not be interested in sitting still. North has mastered the art of engaging kids, using playful antics like jumping around, clapping, and playing peek-a-boo to draw out genuine smiles. Reflecting on standout moments from past years, North recalled one particularly touching experience with a girl who had special needs. Nervous about meeting Santa, she struggled to focus on the camera. North creatively engaged her by having Santa read a story, resulting in a beaming smile that he described as "pure magic." As for what children are wishing for this year, North noted an uptick in requests for dirt bikes, dollhouses, and characters from popular shows like "Bluey" and "Stitch." Each wish list tells a story, and witnessing these moments brings North immense joy. Ultimately, being a Santa's helper is about more than just photo ops and festive attire; it's about creating lasting memories, spreading joy, and navigating the complexities of human emotions during a season that is both magical and, at times, bittersweet. For North and his team, the comfort of knowing they play a part in the holiday spirit makes the hustle and bustle worthwhile. After all, in their world, every day is a chance to create a little more magic.
