In the wake of her Olympic debut at the Paris Games, Australian breaker Rachel "Raygun" Gunn has spoken out regarding the intense criticism she faced following her performance. The 37-year-old athlete, who failed to win any of her three round-robin battles with a stark combined score of 54-0, expressed her shock at the overwhelmingly negative reaction from the public and media. Gunn's unique style, which included dance moves reminiscent of a kangaroo, garnered considerable attention, but not all of it was favorable. In her first interview post-Olympics on "The Project," Gunn described the backlash as "alarming," attributing much of it to a general lack of understanding of breaking as a sport. "The energy and vitriol that people had was pretty alarming. It was really sad how much hate that it did evoke," she lamented, emphasizing that the criticism stemmed largely from a disconnect with the sport's culture and diversity of expression. The Australian breaker found herself at the center of a social media storm, with memes and harsh commentary flooding platforms after her matches. This led to a temporary withdrawal from social media, a decision made necessary by the rising tide of negativity that left her feeling uncomfortable in public spaces. "It put me in a state of panic," she shared, reflecting on the emotional toll the scrutiny took on her. The scrutiny of Gunn did not stop at her performance; conspiracy theories surrounding her qualification for the Olympics began to circulate, culminating in a Change.org petition that accused her of manipulating the qualification process. This petition amassed over 45,000 signatures before being deemed "disgraceful" by Matt Carroll, CEO of the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC), who denounced it as an unfounded spread of misinformation. Gunn qualified for the Paris Games by winning the QMS Oceania Championships in Sydney—an automatic qualifying event. While she was aware of the challenges she would face and the likelihood of defeat, she remained committed to showcasing her unique style. "I wanted to bring out some Australian moves and themes," she explained, noting her inspiration from Australia's iconic boxing kangaroo mascot, BK. Acknowledging the need for better resources in Australia to elevate the country's competitive edge in breaking, Gunn emphasized that the path to international success is not solely her responsibility. "We haven't had the best track record of winning world championships, so I don't think that's just on me," she remarked, indicating a broader need for support and investment in the sport. Despite the harsh criticism, Gunn has chosen to focus on the positive aspects of her experience, highlighting the encouragement she received from fans and supporters. While she plans to take a break from competition, she is determined to connect with those who appreciated her performance. "It has been honestly so amazing to see the positive response to my performance," she said, capturing the essence of her resilience and passion for breaking. As the sport continues to grow and evolve within the Olympic framework, Gunn’s experience serves as a reminder of the challenges athletes face when pushing boundaries and expressing individuality in the pursuit of excellence.
