In a tragic incident that has left a family grappling with profound loss, a Scoulton couple has died following a head-on collision on the Watton-bound carriageway. The inquest, held at the coroner's court in Norwich, revealed that the couple, Mr. and Mrs. Darby, were confirmed dead at the scene of the crash, which occurred at approximately 1:15 PM GMT. Mr. Darby, a retired carpenter and former magistrate, had been undergoing treatment for leukaemia and managing other health conditions, including high blood pressure and diabetes. However, his daughter, Denise Darby, stated that he had not expressed any feelings of unwellness during their last encounter earlier that day. She described her father as a "very safe, confident and competent driver," asserting that he would not have driven if he had concerns about his health. The impact of the collision was severe, with the driver of the other vehicle, a Range Rover, identified as Peter Benn, sustaining serious injuries. Mr. Benn was subsequently airlifted to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge. He reported that he had no recollection of the crash, recalling only waking up in the hospital to learn about his collapsed lung. Witness testimonies indicated that a Range Rover had been driving dangerously and erratically prior to the accident. However, CCTV evidence clarified that this vehicle was not involved in the collision. The police contacted the driver of the erratic vehicle, but it was determined that his statement would not contribute to the investigation, as there was no indication of any wrongdoing on Mr. Benn's part. In her poignant statement to the court, Denise Darby spoke of the couple's deep love for family, highlighting their adoration for their seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The emotional toll of their sudden passing was palpable, as she expressed, "The hole they have left is entirely unimaginable; to lose both parents in an instant was the worst thing in the world." Coroner Ms. Goward concluded the proceedings by recording a verdict of death by road traffic collision, a somber reminder of the fragility of life and the devastating impact of such incidents on families and communities. The loss of Mr. and Mrs. Darby serves as a tragic chapter in the ongoing narrative of road safety and the immeasurable grief that accompanies unexpected tragedy.
