The recent aggression suffered by Congresswoman Patricia Chirinos while she was at a venue in Barranco has sparked a strong debate about the limits of political criticism and violence in the public sphere. Regardless of the ideological differences one may have with Chirinos, the violence and harassment she faced are absolutely unacceptable. This incident not only affects Peruvian politics but also jeopardizes democratic values and social coexistence. The events occurred when a group of people, in an act of palpable hostility, surrounded the parliamentarian, hurling insults at her and throwing a glass at her. Congressman Luis Aragón, who was also present, suffered the same type of aggression. Such behavior cannot be justified under any argument, especially in a context where political violence seems to be normalizing. Democracy is based on tolerance and respect for differences. It is imperative that, regardless of the political stance one adopts, appropriate channels are used to express disagreement. Electoral processes, judicial instances, and public debate are the tools that should be employed to address political differences. Harassment and personal aggression are not only acts of cowardice but also delegitimize any legitimate claim that may be made. These types of acts are not new in Peruvian politics. Over the years, several politicians have suffered similar attacks, always perpetrated by groups that hide behind the anonymity of the crowd. Violence in politics is not just a problem affecting one sector; it is a symptom of a greater malaise affecting society as a whole. Recent history shows us that impunity and a lack of condemnation for these behaviors can lead to an even more severe spiral of violence. Particularly concerning is the reaction of some political leaders who attempt to justify these aggressions and harassments. An example of this is the comment from former Prime Minister Mirtha Vásquez, who suggested that moral sanction is a valid response to what she considers a lack of institutional action. This dangerously distorted logic disguises what is essentially an attack on a person's integrity as justification. If we continue down this path, the risk of violence becoming an accepted method for resolving political differences is alarming. The legitimization of harassment, even when presented as a "moral sanction," opens the door to much more serious acts. Politics should be a space for debate and confrontation of ideas, not for physical or psychological aggression. In a moment of deep crisis for the country, where polarization and distrust are palpable, it is essential to ensure a minimum level of respect for all political actors. Instead of fostering hatred and violence, political leaders should call for reflection and respect for one another. The upcoming general elections are an opportunity for citizens to demand more civilized and democratic forms of political participation. It is vital for all sectors of society to speak out against violence. Doctors, teachers, artists, and, of course, politicians must stand up in defense of human dignity and peaceful coexistence. Institutions must implement effective measures to protect those engaged in politics, but also to condemn attitudes that promote violence. As we approach a new electoral process, it is urgent that a collective commitment is established by citizens and their representatives. Violence is not a valid path in democracy, and it is everyone's responsibility to ensure that situations like the one Patricia Chirinos experienced never happen again. In this regard, political leaders should reflect on their role in building a climate of peace and respect in the country. Politics can and should be a space of respect and discussion, where differences are resolved through dialogue and consensus. Aggression, harassment, and violence only lead to a greater deterioration of our institutions and a weakening of democracy. It is time for all voices to unite to condemn violence and advocate for a more civilized and democratic politics.
