The arrival at Jorge Chávez Airport on a cold, cloudy night marks the beginning of a series of reflections on the essence of being Peruvian, leading us to cling to those moments of tenderness and affection that provide us comfort in uncertain times. Amid a political climate that often feels criminal and surreal, those spaces we call "islands of love and tenderness" emerge, where the warmth of human affection, enriching conversations, and shared memories become temporary refuges for our souls. In these islands, spontaneous laughter, flavors of traditional cuisine, and the beauty of our traditions manifest—elements that unite us despite distances. However, when observing our national reality, it is hard not to feel frustration in the face of a political system that perpetuates injustice and exclusion. The recent allocation of lifetime pensions to former presidents who have betrayed the trust of the people is a clear example of how inequalities are perpetuated and the true needs of the population are ignored. As I shared these thoughts with friends during one of our gatherings in these islands of love, the conversation inevitably turned to a critique of a leadership that seems disconnected from the everyday problems of Peruvians. A chancellor who tells unbelievable stories and a political culture marked by inefficiency and disenchantment leave a bitter taste in the mouth. In this context, the true aspirations of citizens for health, security, and dignified employment seem relegated to the background. Despite this bleak outlook, we must not allow despair to consume us. History, as historian Howard Zinn aptly points out, is not just a chronicle of human cruelty but also a celebration of compassion and sacrifice. In difficult times, remembering those moments of human greatness can be the spark that ignites our capacity to act and change the course. It is essential that instead of focusing solely on the negative, we seek to nourish our energy with the positive experiences we have lived. Every small act of kindness and every act of solidarity builds the future, which is, after all, an endless succession of presents. The way we choose to live today can make a difference in tomorrow. My recent encounters with dear friends, like Teresina Muñoz-Nájar, are perfect examples of how networks of support and strength can be created. Together, we have worked on projects that reclaim the memory and history of our country, an effort that reminds us that we are not alone in this struggle. Her recent work, "Valientes: women of the bicentennial," is a testament to the courage and resilience of Peruvian women, a necessary tribute in times when so many face abuse and inequality. The dedication of her book to the extraordinary women who have been part of our history is a reminder of the legacy we carry in our hands. Initiatives like these are what drive us to keep moving forward, to not give up, and to work for a future where respect and equity are tangible realities. The spaces of love and tenderness we create in our communities are essential for facing the challenges presented by politics and daily life. It is in those moments of genuine connection that we find the strength to keep fighting, where the friendship and solidarity that accompany us on our journey are forged. Thus, as we look toward the future, we must not forget that every small effort counts. Hope is a powerful tool that, when nurtured in our islands of love, can transform our reality. Although the path may be uncertain, the commitment to building a more just and humane world is in our hands. In honor of all the brave women who have come before us and those who continue to fight, the journey goes on, and together we can write a new chapter in the history of our country.
