In the midst of the ongoing conflict in Gaza, thousands of people have been forced to flee the main hospital, Shifa, due to heavy gunfire and lack of basic resources. The Israeli military claims to have provided a safe corridor for people to move south, but Palestinian health officials inside the hospital contradict this, stating that the compound is constantly surrounded by heavy gunfire. The situation in Shifa is dire, with the World Health Organization reporting that the hospital has been without water for three days and is no longer functioning as a hospital. The hospital's plight has become a symbol of the larger war between Israel and Hamas. Palestinians view Shifa as a place of suffering, where doctors perform surgery without anesthesia and thousands seek shelter in its corridors. Israel accuses Hamas of using the hospital as a command center, but Hamas and hospital staff deny these allegations. Currently, there are around 650 patients and critically wounded individuals in Shifa, along with approximately 2,500 displaced Palestinians seeking shelter. Efforts to evacuate the remaining patients and displaced people from Shifa are complicated by the lack of ambulances and other resources. Several hospitals and clinics in Gaza have been forced to shut down, while others are already at full capacity. The health ministry reports that three babies and four other patients have died due to the hospital's emergency generator running out of fuel, and another 36 babies and patients are at risk because life-saving medical equipment cannot be powered. Moving these patients safely and providing them with the care they need will take time and cooperation from all parties involved. The situation in Gaza continues to worsen, with over 11,000 Palestinians killed and 1,200 Israelis killed since the war began. The U.S. has called for temporary pauses in the fighting to allow for aid distribution, but Israel has only agreed to short periods for civilians to flee. The conflict shows no signs of abating, leaving the people of Gaza in a vulnerable and desperate situation.
