A strong earthquake, measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale, struck the district of Yauca in the province of Caravelí, Arequipa region, in southern Peru in the early hours of Friday. This seismic event, which occurred at 00:36 local time, caused alarm among the population and immediately activated emergency protocols in anticipation of potential severe consequences. According to the Peruvian Geophysical Institute (IGP), the epicenter of this powerful tremor was located 25 kilometers southwest of Yauca at a depth of 54 kilometers, raising concerns about the possibility of landslides and other significant damages. The impact of the earthquake was strongly felt in Yauca, reaching a level VI on the Mercalli scale, indicating that the majority of the population was able to perceive it. Given the gravity of the situation, the National Institute of Civil Defense (Indeci) emphasized the importance of having an emergency kit prepared for situations of major earthquakes, reminding citizens of the need to be prepared to face such natural events. Furthermore, the magnitude of the earthquake led to a tsunami alert being issued for the Peruvian coasts, prompting the Hydrography and Navigation Directorate of the Peruvian Navy to call for an immediate evacuation of coastal areas. This preventive measure aims to safeguard the lives of residents against possible repercussions resulting from the strong earthquake. The consequences of the earthquake were also felt in northern Chile, prompting an immediate response from the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Chilean Navy (SHOA), which ruled out the generation of a tsunami on the Chilean coasts due to the specific characteristics of the earthquake and its geographical location. Both Peru and Chile are located in the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a region where approximately 85% of the world's seismic activity is concentrated. This area, characterized by constant tectonic and volcanic activity, is affected by the friction between tectonic plates that generate accumulated tensions released through periodic earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. In this context, the importance of preparation and a rapid response to events like the 7.0 magnitude earthquake in southern Peru is crucial for protecting lives and properties. Authorities are monitoring the situation to assess potential damages and the needs of affected communities, aiming to provide necessary support during this crisis following the earthquake.
