The former Peruvian presidential candidate and leader of the Fuerza Popular party, Keiko Fujimori, reiterated this Sunday that the funds for her electoral campaigns had a legal origin, rejecting the reason for the upcoming trial that will begin tomorrow against her for the alleged crime of money laundering. Fujimori stated that in the preliminary investigation it has been demonstrated that "the funds come from respected individuals and businessmen (in Peru), it has been shown that these contributions come from lawful and legal funds." Regarding the version of representatives of the construction company Odebrecht, which allegedly contributed 1.2 million dollars to her campaign in 2011, Fujimori recalled that the owner of the Brazilian firm, Marcelo Odebrecht, said he did not know her and the former executive in Peru, Jorge Barata, mentioned that he "never" approached him. "They have denied receiving the contributions," Keiko Fujimori indicated in an interview with Canal N. The former Peruvian legislator also stated that she feels "strong" at the beginning of the criminal process, but lamented having gone through "a lot of pain" and "arbitrary and unjust situations" during the last 8 years, such as the three times she was in preventive detention in this case. In this regard, she expressed her solidarity with the more than 40 people equally accused in this case, including leaders of Fuerza Popular, associates, alleged contributors, her lawyer Giuliana Loza, and her ex-husband Mark Vito. Fujimori stated that the prosecutors in this case have had a "political intention" in accusing her to affect her image and requested the suspension of her political party to "try to eliminate Fujimorism from the electoral sphere." The Peruvian politician recalled that in the electoral campaigns she has carried out, there was a combination of private activities to raise funds and the public contributions that parties receive for their activities. She avoided revealing the amount of funds raised through cocktail events organization because she will provide that information in the oral trial. When asked about her expectations of running for public office in the general elections of 2026, Fujimori replied that she has "not yet" made a decision on a possible candidacy. However, she pointed out that she would "love" for her father, the former president Alberto Fujimori, 85 years old, to be a candidate, although she added that it will be the party's instances that will confirm a position on this matter. The leader of Fuerza Popular added that the "clarity" and "knowledge of the country" of her father put him in an expectant position for the upcoming 2026 elections, generating "fear of a possible candidacy" on her part. However, the former president (1990-2000), who was released from prison last year after receiving a humanitarian pardon in 2017, will undergo hip replacement surgery next Tuesday in Lima due to a fall he suffered last week at home, as indicated by his daughter. In addition, Alberto Fujimori is receiving therapies for tongue cancer and "is doing it with great spirit and courage," expressed the former candidate. The former candidate mentioned that her father's recent registration with Fuerza Popular has generated enthusiasm and excitement within her political movement, but the final decision on a possible candidacy will be made later on.
