The flames are consuming large areas of land in Portugal, leaving a tragic trail of death and destruction in their wake. So far, three deaths and at least 17 injuries have been reported, some of them serious, in the latest outbreak of fires ravaging the southern region of Porto. Local authorities are battling more than thirty active fires, which has triggered an emergency situation in several towns in the district of Aveiro.

According to the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC), the tragic deaths include a man who was found charred in Sever do Vouga and another who died of a heart attack while trying to escape the flames in Albergaria-a-Velha. This latter incident has struck the community, as the victim was a 28-year-old Brazilian employed at a company dedicated to forestry exploration. His attempt to recover machinery was tragically interrupted by the advance of the fire.

The impact of these fires is not limited to human losses. The flames have left behind a trail of injuries, several of them in critical condition. The situation in hospitals is concerning; three people have been admitted to Aveiro Hospital, with two suffering severe burns caused by explosions related to the fire. Additionally, another seriously injured person has been transferred to the University Hospital of Coimbra, reflecting the severity of the situation.

Firefighters, heroes in this struggle, face extreme conditions as they tirelessly work to control the fires. In total, the country reports 36 fires, of which five are large-scale, all concentrated in the district of Aveiro. One of these fires, the largest, has erupted in Oliveira de Azeméis and has required the mobilization of 616 personnel, including firefighters and other resources, as well as seven aerial units combating the flames from the sky.

In light of the crisis's magnitude, the National Emergency Authority has decided to extend the state of emergency until at least next Thursday. This measure reflects the seriousness of the situation and the need for additional resources to control the fires threatening the lives and property of thousands of people.

International collaboration has also been a key factor in responding to this crisis. The European Union has announced the mobilization of eight amphibious aircraft, distributed among different countries, to assist in firefighting efforts. This support has become a source of encouragement for the rescue teams on the ground, who appreciate any additional resources that can help mitigate the situation.

In his statements, Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro expressed his gratitude for the assistance received. He specifically mentioned Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, as well as leaders from other countries such as France, Italy, Greece, and Spain, who have shown their willingness to provide support during this critical moment.

The situation in Portugal is a grim reminder of the devastating consequences of wildfires, a crisis that is becoming increasingly frequent in many parts of the world due to climate change. As the flames continue to advance, the resilience and bravery of emergency teams are crucial to combating the fire and protecting affected communities.

The citizens of Portugal find themselves in a moment of mourning and concern, facing not only the devastation of the fires but also the fear of what may come next. Solidarity among nations and the rapid mobilization of resources are more important than ever, as the country needs to unite to confront this adversity and rebuild what has been lost.

As the situation unfolds, the international community watches closely, hoping that the flames will finally be controlled and that Portugal can begin to heal the wounds caused by this tragedy. The fight against wildfires is not only a challenge for the present; it also serves as a wake-up call about the urgent need to address the underlying causes of these disasters in the future.
