In a significant development for cancer care in the Pacific Northwest, MultiCare Health System has officially launched the MultiCare Cancer Institute, a comprehensive initiative aimed at delivering high-quality, personalized oncology services and advancing cancer research. This initiative underscores MultiCare's commitment to enhancing access to critical cancer care across the region. The MultiCare Cancer Institute will focus on creating subspecialty disease programs and centers of excellence, building on the health system's established cancer services. By doing so, the institute aims to position itself as the most integrated and expansive cancer care program in the area, consolidating trusted oncology services into a single, cohesive entity. Central to the institute's mission is the establishment of strong partnerships, notably with Northwest Medical Specialties, a prominent physician-owned oncology practice in the Puget Sound region. This collaboration is intended to increase access to comprehensive care and expand research opportunities for patients. The MultiCare Cancer Institute's integrated approach will prioritize advancing cancer prevention and early detection, ensuring that patients can receive cutting-edge treatments close to home and return to their daily lives more quickly. The helm of the institute will be guided by Dr. Margo Shoup, who has been appointed as president and chief medical officer. Dr. Shoup, a nationally recognized surgical oncologist, brings extensive experience in developing and leading cancer programs. As vice president of the Society of Surgical Oncology, she is well-positioned to steer MultiCare's new initiative. "By working alongside companies pioneering groundbreaking diagnostic techniques and collaborating with oncology physicians statewide, we can personalize care plans for our patients," Dr. Shoup stated. She emphasized the urgency of addressing cancer, noting it remains the leading cause of death in Washington state. MultiCare Cancer Institute is actively developing specialized teams to focus on various cancers, including breast, lung, gastrointestinal, and prostate cancers. They are recruiting some of the nation’s leading cancer experts to join the current roster of skilled specialists. This strategic staffing will ensure that patients receive tailored, trustworthy cancer care throughout their treatment journeys. Dr. Laila Rashidi, a colorectal surgeon and the institute’s medical director for surgical oncology, highlighted the importance of local access to cancer care. "Patients shouldn't have to travel all the way to a big city like Seattle for care or access to the latest clinical trials," she stated. The partnerships being formed across the Pacific Northwest are designed to bring high-quality cancer care to communities, ensuring patients can receive treatment closer to home. The MultiCare Cancer Institute will have locations in key cities including Olympia, Yakima, Puyallup, Spokane, Tacoma, Auburn, Gig Harbor, and Poulsbo, reflecting its commitment to accessibility. With the launch of this institute, MultiCare is poised to make substantial strides in the fight against cancer, paving the way for improved outcomes and enhanced patient experiences across the region.
