A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck the Nepal-Tibet border region early Tuesday morning, resulting in significant devastation and a series of aftershocks that continue to impact the area. As of Wednesday noon, the region has recorded a staggering 646 aftershocks, with the largest registering at a magnitude of 4.4, located approximately 18 kilometers from the quake's epicenter. This seismic event has claimed the lives of at least 126 individuals and left another 188 injured, according to reports from local authorities. The earthquake, which occurred at 6:35 AM (IST), was centered in Xizang, also known as the Tibet Autonomous Region, specifically near Tonglai Village in Changsuo Township of Dingri within the Shigatse area. Significant structural damage has been reported, with entire houses collapsing in some regions, particularly in the affected village. The tremors were not limited to Tibet; they were felt widely across northern India, including states such as Bihar, West Bengal, and Sikkim, as well as in the bustling capital of Delhi. Fortunately, there have been no reported casualties or significant damage in India. In response to the disaster, the Red Cross Society of China has mobilized quickly, dispatching a second batch of relief supplies to the affected areas that includes essential items such as cotton tents, quilts, and folding beds—totaling 4,300 items. Moreover, over 50 rescue workers have been deployed to assist in emergency efforts, bringing vital supplies such as sanitary toilets and catering vehicles to help support the local population. The National Centre for Seismology has confirmed that the earthquake struck at a depth of 10 kilometers, a shallow depth that often amplifies the impact of seismic waves, contributing to the destruction witnessed on the ground. The United States Geological Survey pinpointed the earthquake's location as being 93 kilometers northeast of Lobuche, a village located near the Khumbu Glacier and about 150 kilometers east of Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital. Nepal lies in a highly seismically active zone where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates converge, making it prone to such seismic events. This most recent quake has sparked renewed concerns about the region's vulnerability to earthquakes, prompting authorities in Nepal and surrounding areas to remain on high alert. The situation continues to evolve, with rescue efforts underway and recovery operations beginning in earnest. As the region grapples with the aftermath of this natural disaster, the resilience of its communities will be tested yet again, as they confront the challenges of rebuilding and recovery.
