According to a recent news release from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), an eruption has erupted within the Kaluapele summit caldera, prompting an elevation of Kīlauea's volcano alert level from ADVISORY to WARNING. Simultaneously, the aviation color code has shifted from YELLOW to RED as scientists evaluate the eruption and associated hazards. Webcam images captured during this event reveal a dramatic scene: a series of fissures are spewing lava fountains that contribute to a growing flow within the summit caldera. This vibrant display of volcanic activity, however, comes with significant concerns. The eruption is taking place in a closed section of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, where high levels of volcanic gases such as water vapor, carbon dioxide, and sulfur dioxide pose a risk to both the environment and public health. Particularly concerning is the potential for volcanic smog, or "vog," created when sulfur dioxide reacts with water vapor. This phenomenon can have adverse health effects, damage crops, and contribute to acid rain. Kīlauea is renowned as one of the most closely monitored volcanoes globally, outfitted with a robust array of scientific instruments. These tools range from ground sensors that detect seismic activity to devices analyzing gases emanating from the volcano’s vents. What sets Kīlauea apart from other volcanoes is the unique mechanism behind its explosive eruptions, likened to a "stomp-rocket mechanism." During effusive eruptions, as lava flows and fountains gradually empty the magma reservoir, the rocky roof above loses its structural integrity. This sudden collapse can lead to a rapid increase in pressure, forcing gas and rubble through vents in the caldera. This process is evocative of a stomp-rocket toy, where stepping on an airbag connected to a hose sends a projectile soaring into the sky. They are prepared to adjust the alert level and aviation color code as necessary, and a new Volcanic Activity Notice will be issued should there be any significant changes in volcanic activity.
