In recent days, Quito has been the scene of a series of wildfires that have raised concern and alarm among the population. During his weekly report, Mayor Pabel Muñoz addressed the situation, stating that it is crucial to investigate all hypotheses surrounding these incidents, which appear to be caused both by irresponsible agricultural practices and by malicious actions of individuals seeking to cause harm. Muñoz called on the police to thoroughly investigate the causes of the fires, mentioning at least two hypotheses that are under consideration. The first points to agricultural burnings, a traditional practice in many rural areas that, according to the mayor, has proven to be inadequate in the current context. "We are caught between tradition and ignorance," Muñoz stated, emphasizing that controlled burns are a form of irresponsibility in a world where climate change increases the vulnerability of ecosystems. The mayor did not hold back on warnings, assuring that those who continue with these risky agricultural practices could face severe fines. "Don't do it, and if you do, you will receive a fine; this is not a traditional matter. You have no right to set fire to the city," he insisted, making it clear that the safety and well-being of the community must take precedence over traditions that, in this case, are dangerous. The second hypothesis being considered is the possibility that the flames are caused by "heartless, criminal individuals" seeking to create chaos in the city. Muñoz did not rule out the possibility that there might be political interests behind these acts, suggesting that some may want to damage the image of the municipal administration or the city's Fire Department. "I will go to the ends of the earth," the mayor asserted, revealing his determination to find those responsible and clarify the motives behind these fires. One of the most notable incidents occurred on September 7 at the old El Chiche bridge when a fire broke out along the roadside. Muñoz pointed out that the location of the fire suggests that someone on a motorcycle or in a vehicle may have intentionally caused it, increasing the urgency of the investigation. "Why are they burning right along the sidewalk?" he questioned, implying that there is an element of disregard for the safety of the community. The effects of these fires have been devastating. Although precise figures on the amount of affected vegetation are not yet available, Muñoz reported that at least 20 head of cattle and one poultry facility have perished, in addition to strawberry crops completely consumed by the flames. This not only demonstrates the environmental impact but also the severe economic losses faced by farmers and ranchers in the region. The community has responded with concern and a growing demand for answers. Many citizens feel powerless in the face of the devastation caused by the fire and are calling for more robust measures to prevent future incidents. Collaboration between the municipal administration, security forces, and citizens is essential to effectively combat this problem. Pabel Muñoz has urged the population to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity that may contribute to the spread of fire. Prevention and education on proper fire management are key to preventing situations like this from recurring. "The community must be part of the solution," he emphasized, highlighting the importance of working together. As investigations progress, the eyes of Quito's residents are on the authorities, hoping that appropriate measures will be taken to protect their homes and environment. The fight against wildfires is not only a challenge for the government but a call to collective action from all inhabitants of the city. In this regard, Muñoz has made it clear that he will spare no effort to uncover the truth and ensure that the guilty face justice.
