Powerlifter Lottie McGuinness is gearing up for her Paralympic debut in Paris 2024, a journey that has been anything but smooth. Reflecting on her path, McGuinness shared, “It’s been a long uphill battle, but I’ve got there in the end and the view is incredible.” Her admission that she faced serious challenges on her journey is a reminder of the resilience required in elite sports. There was a time when she found herself in a “bad space” within the sport, leading her to question whether she wanted to continue her powerlifting career. However, she has emerged from that difficult period with renewed vigor and determination, stating, “I came out the other side such a better person.” Today, McGuinness describes powerlifting as the “best job in the world,” a sentiment that resonates deeply given her dramatic progression in the sport. In just five years, she has transformed her lifting capability from a modest 40 kg to an impressive 104 kg, with an incredible 20 kg added in just two years. “It’s really made me fall in love with the sport again,” she remarked, highlighting her rekindled passion. Much of her training took place in a makeshift gym she constructed in a barn next to her home in the picturesque Yorkshire Dales during the COVID-19 pandemic. “When lockdown was announced, I got some basic gym equipment, some resistance bands and little dumbbells,” she explained. McGuinness thrives in her solo training environment, despite the challenges posed by winter’s chill. “In the winter the barn is cold; it gets freezing in there. When it’s yucky and dark, it’s hard to get in there - but you have to adapt,” she emphasized. In addition to her training, McGuinness balances a part-time role within the NHS to support herself financially. Yet, she finds working in sports to be “pretty cool,” showcasing her commitment and passion for powerlifting while navigating the demands of daily life. As she prepares for the Paralympics, Lottie McGuinness embodies the spirit of perseverance and dedication. Her story serves as an inspiration to many, highlighting that the journey to success is often fraught with obstacles, but with determination and love for the sport, incredible achievements are within reach.
