The last week of August 2024 has witnessed a deep and critical analysis through various editorials addressing crucial issues in the national context. One of the most alarming topics has been the situation in Pataz, where illegal mining appears to thrive unchecked. In this context, illegal miners have become increasingly confident in their situation, highlighting the ineffectiveness of authorities to curb an activity that, besides being illicit, is linked to corruption and organized crime. As noted in one of the editorials, the involved institutions—regional government, police, prosecution, and others—seem to be aware of this reality, but their actions are insufficient to effectively tackle the problem. Another critical point addressed during the week has been Law 32108, which has sparked extensive debate within society. This new legal framework has not only benefited criminal organizations but has also jeopardized the credibility of the country’s political and judicial system. The concern is centered on how this law, which was supposed to strengthen the fight against crime, has ended up protecting those in the eye of the storm, underscoring the need for a thorough review of the laws governing the matter. Lima, for its part, is positioning itself as a city that will host important sporting events, including the 2027 Pan American Games. This focus on organizing major events represents an opportunity for authorities to take the reins of urban development and improve the city’s infrastructure. The experience of the 2019 Pan American Games is a clear example of how these events can accelerate the completion of projects that benefit the population. However, this legacy will only materialize if the capital authorities are willing to do their part and ensure that the necessary works are executed in a timely and efficient manner. In a more economic context, the future of Petro-Perú has become a critical issue demanding immediate attention from the Government. The financial and operational crisis faced by the state oil company cannot be ignored, and it is imperative that clear decisions are made regarding its restructuring and viability. The situation of Petro-Perú not only affects the company itself but also has direct implications for the country’s economy and the energy sector, highlighting the importance of effective and responsible management. The achievement of athlete Angélica Espinoza, who has qualified for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, has been another highlighted event. Her accomplishment underscores the need for greater investments in sports, especially concerning athletes with disabilities. Such stories not only generate national pride but should also serve as a call to authorities to provide the necessary support to allow more talents to emerge in the future. However, not all editorials carry an optimistic tone. The situation of public transportation in Lima has reached alarming levels due to the extortion by mafias threatening drivers and conductors. The report that nearly 40% of transportation companies are being extorted is a clear signal that the situation has spiraled out of control, and authorities must act immediately to restore safety and order in this critical sector. Finally, the criticism of "mochasueldos" (additional unreported payments) in Congress highlights a lack of transparency that erodes public trust in elected representatives. Allegations of unjustified additional payments underscore the need for clear and effective accountability, as well as the importance of lifting the immunity of those who may be involved in such acts of corruption to allow for a proper investigation. In summary, last week exposed several issues that need to be urgently addressed. From illegal mining in Pataz, through the ineffectiveness of laws that should combat crime, to the need for adequate infrastructure for sporting events and safe public transportation. All of this leads us to reflect on the importance of decisive and effective action from authorities, civil society involvement, and fostering a culture of transparency and accountability that allows for progress toward a more just and prosperous Peru.
