A treasure trove of Corby’s history has found a new home at the Corby Heritage Centre, thanks to the generous donation of 23 films by former BAFTA nominees Paul Balmer and Judy Caine. These films provide a rich tapestry of the town's historical, cultural, and artistic narrative, stretching from 1585 to 2022, and are set to become invaluable resources for local schools, community groups, and researchers alike. Mr. Balmer and Ms. Caine expressed their delight at being approached by the council to curate this significant collection. They emphasized the importance of preserving and sharing Corby’s history for future generations, ensuring that both the triumphs and trials of the community are documented and celebrated. The films cover a wide range of topics, offering insights into iconic events such as Corby's Pole Fair, as well as focusing on the pivotal role played by local steelworkers during World War II, illustrated through the story of P.L.U.T.O. As the films delve into the more recent history of the town, they also shine a light on the contributions of the Polish, Latvian, and Scottish communities, reflecting Corby's diverse cultural landscape. This emphasis on inclusivity and representation is particularly timely, as many communities are gaining recognition for their roles in shaping the modern identity of the town. The films are not just a nostalgic look back at Corby; they also serve as educational tools. Since 2014, Balmer and Caine have been dedicated to mentoring young people aged 11 to 24 through their community interest company. This initiative aims to equip the next generation with hands-on experience in media, paving the way for careers in film, television, radio, and webcasting. By supporting local youth in this way, they are fostering a new wave of storytellers who can continue to document and celebrate Corby’s legacy. This donation marks a significant step towards ensuring that the rich history of Corby is accessible and appreciated, providing a platform for learning and engagement. As the films become available at the heritage centre, they will undoubtedly stimulate interest in Corby's past, inspiring both residents and visitors to explore the town's unique narrative. With Balmer and Caine’s contributions, the heritage centre is set to become a vital hub for cultural exploration and historical reflection in the heart of Corby.
