Since the fateful 8th of September 2023, when a devastating earthquake of magnitude 7 struck Morocco, the world's attention has focused on the consequences of this tragedy. The epicenter of the disaster was located about 70 kilometers from Marrakech, severely affecting several provinces such as Al Haouz, Taroudant, Chichaua, and Ouarzazate. The population, already struggling to rebuild their lives, was plunged into unimaginable suffering, with over 3,000 lives lost and thousands of structures destroyed, including homes and schools. Amid this devastation, the response from the Málaga community has been a shining example of solidarity and cooperation. A few days after the earthquake, the Málaga City Council convened an Emergency Table, a forum where various institutions came together to design an action plan to assist the most affected areas. Their commitment was clear and resolute: to leave no one behind. One of the main projects that emerged from this table was "Care and Protection for Children and Families Most Affected by the Earthquake in Morocco's Al Hauz Province," an initiative that reflects the altruistic spirit of the people of Málaga. This collaboration involves three Málaga-based entities: Prodiversa, the Cooperation and Development Association with North Africa (CODENAF), and the Moroccan Association for the Integration of Immigrants in Málaga. The Málaga City Council has also joined this noble cause, supporting the necessary funding to carry out this crucial mission. The Al Hauz province, particularly villages like Imi Nougerzi, Dogouj, and Tinmel, has become the main target of these initiatives. These communities have been severely impacted; many families still live in tents or containers, and the need for humanitarian aid is urgent. The commitment of the Málaga entities has been vital in alleviating, even if temporarily, the suffering of these communities. The actions undertaken have varied, ranging from the distribution of first aid kits that include clothing and hygiene products to the establishment of community toilets to ensure basic sanitation needs. Modular containers have also been adapted to function as schools, providing children with a place to continue their education amidst adversity. Recreational and cultural activities have been implemented to offer some normalcy and joy to the little ones, who have perhaps been the hardest hit by this tragedy. Through these initiatives, hundreds of families have been able to find a ray of hope amid the darkness. The psychosocial support provided by support caravans has been crucial in helping those affected heal the invisible wounds left by such a significant natural disaster. The work of volunteers and Málaga organizations has been admirable and worthy of recognition. Despite the ongoing challenges and the difficult road ahead, it is essential to highlight the solidarity of the Málaga people in these critical moments. This effort not only reflects the strength of the community but also an unwavering commitment to those in vulnerable situations. The Málaga cooperation has proven to be a true "muscle" in international aid, reaffirming the importance of solidarity in times of crisis. At Prodiversa, where we have been leading development cooperation projects for nearly three decades, there is a profound pride in this collective response. The solidarity shown by the Málaga society is a powerful reminder that, despite the divisive rhetoric that often saturates the political and media landscape, generosity and mutual support remain the values that define us as a community. In summary, Málaga's response to the terrible earthquake in Morocco is a story of hope amid tragedy. As organizations and volunteers continue their work, it is clear that solidarity knows no borders and that the commitment to help those in greatest need is stronger than ever. The Málaga community can be proud of its role in this global effort, demonstrating that empathy and action can make a real difference in the lives of many.
