In recent weeks, the Bariloche region has been experiencing an unusual phenomenon that has led to a significant increase in avalanche activity. According to López, a mountain guide from the Argentine Association of Mountain Guides (AAGM), this phenomenon is due to the presence of "persistent slabs," characteristics of continental climates that have been favored by an extended period of intense cold. This type of snow, which is not typical for the area, has generated growing concern among skiers and winter sports enthusiasts. López explains that, unlike what is usually experienced in Bariloche, where instability is associated with storms, the current situation persists over time. "People tend to think that after a prolonged snowfall, the snow stabilizes, but this is not the case. The current conditions are more complex and require a different approach regarding safety," comments the guide, who warns that although we are not facing an extremely dangerous situation, it is crucial not to let our guard down. The mountain guide also points out that the lack of knowledge among many users can lead to risky situations. "The type of avalanches we are facing is atypical for Bariloche. That’s why it is crucial for skiers to consult the avalanche bulletin we publish daily, where we inform about the danger level, recommendations, and areas to avoid," he adds. Furthermore, López emphasizes the importance of always going out in groups and with the proper equipment. "One should not ski alone, and everyone must have an avalanche transceiver (DVA), a shovel, a probe, and a first aid kit. Although large avalanches are not currently occurring, the potential danger should never be underestimated," warns López, who emphasizes that certain terrains are more prone to these situations. The current context invites reflection on the preparation and education of those who practice mountain sports. "There are those who venture into dangerous terrains without the proper equipment or necessary experience. This can lead to critical situations not only due to avalanches but also from falls or injuries," states the guide. In his opinion, it is vital for those wishing to ski off-piste to be well-informed and properly trained. The practice of off-piste skiing, which is gaining popularity, presents challenges that should not be taken lightly. It is essential for skiers to understand the differences and risks involved in sliding on virgin snow compared to conventional slopes. The quality of the snow can vary, and with it, the safety conditions. For freeride enthusiasts, the right equipment is essential. López recommends wider and longer skis than traditional ones, along with specific boots and a safety system that includes an ARVA, probe, and shovel. "It’s not just about having the equipment, but knowing how to use it correctly. Training and knowledge are key to enjoying this modality safely," he points out. Safety extends beyond equipment; it also involves planning and real-time decision-making. "Being attentive to weather conditions and any changes in the terrain is vital to minimize risks. Having insurance that covers off-piste activities is another measure that should not be overlooked," he advises. Consequently, those who decide to venture into the mountains must be well-prepared and aware of the implications of their choices. Continuous training, teamwork, and a proactive approach to prevention are essential to ensure a rewarding and safe experience in the mountains of Bariloche. With the right knowledge and precautions, enjoying the snowy landscapes and the adrenaline of off-piste skiing can be a safe and exciting experience.
