In a heartfelt tribute to the late Ben Saunders, his legacy lives on through a foundation dedicated to providing joy and respite to families facing the challenges of serious illness. Four years after his untimely passing, the Reece Hawley Foundation continues to offer support to children and families in need, transforming Ben's own experiences into a powerful mission of compassion and community. The foundation, inspired by a holiday adventure Ben enjoyed shortly before he died, has established lodges on the picturesque border between Wiltshire and Gloucestershire. Designed to create lasting memories, these lodges provide a range of recreational activities including crazy golf, water sports, and both indoor and outdoor swimming pools. Each year, the operational costs of running these facilities approximate £15,000, ensuring that the experiences offered remain accessible to families who could benefit the most. Referrals to this invaluable service come through hospitals across the UK, emphasizing the foundation's commitment to reaching those who need support during difficult times. As Mr. Saunders poignantly shared, the emotional weight of their mission is underscored by the fact that some families who have utilized the lodges have tragically lost their children. "It's very difficult some of it," he remarked, reflecting the profound sadness that accompanies their work, yet also the importance of providing a sense of respite and joy. The impact of the Reece Hawley Foundation has not gone unnoticed, receiving the prestigious Points of Light Award in 2023, presented by former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. This recognition not only applauds the foundation's efforts but also highlights the substantial role that community champions and volunteers play in supporting families during challenging healthcare journeys. In addition to offering lodging and recreational opportunities, the foundation also provides vouchers to families and young patients being treated at the Teenage Cancer Trust ward in Bristol. Ms. Saunders articulated the foundation's understanding of the financial burdens that come with prolonged hospital stays. "We're very aware—and Ben was very aware—of the financial impact, so if we can help a little bit, then that's great," she said, encapsulating the essence of their mission to alleviate some of the stress faced by families in crisis. As the foundation continues to grow and evolve, its goals remain clear: to honor Ben's legacy by uplifting families and creating a sense of normalcy in times of turmoil. With aspirations to expand their reach and resources, the foundation stands as a beacon of hope, embodying Ben’s dream of a lasting impact, one family at a time.
