In a bid to empower young girls and foster their confidence, the Strong Girls Squad in Lincoln is rolling out summer holiday coaching sessions dedicated to weightlifting. The initiative, founded by Kristen Ingraham-Morgan, recognizes a pressing need in the fitness community: the need for safe, supportive spaces where girls can engage in strength training without intimidation. Ingraham-Morgan highlights a common hurdle many women face in traditional gym settings. "Weightlifting rooms can be intimidating and uncomfortable for women and girls," she explains. To combat this, the Strong Girls Squad has created an environment specifically tailored for girls aged 11 to 17. Participants are not only taught how to use various strength training equipment but are also given guidance in a supportive atmosphere that encourages them to push their limits. The impact of such programs is evident in the experiences of the girls involved. Lohla, an 11-year-old participant, shared her perspective on the transformation she has undergone through the squad's coaching sessions. "I've learned that if you give it a go, you might actually be able to do it and you might impress yourself more than you think," she said. Lohla's sentiment reflects a broader theme of self-discovery and empowerment that the Strong Girls Squad aims to instill in all its members. As the popularity of weightlifting continues to grow, opportunities like those provided by the Strong Girls Squad are crucial for breaking down barriers and changing the narrative surrounding women in sports. By fostering an inclusive space, this initiative not only helps girls build physical strength but also nurtures mental resilience and self-esteem. It is a powerful reminder of the importance of community support in helping young individuals realize their potential, both in and out of the gym. As the summer sessions progress, the hope is that more and more girls will find the courage to step into the weightlifting arena, armed not just with newfound skills but also a robust sense of confidence that will carry them through many challenges ahead.
