The streets of Accrington came alive this weekend as thousands gathered for the highly anticipated Soapbox Challenge, a beloved local event that has become a staple of community spirit and creativity. Enthusiastic competitors and spectators alike were treated to a delightful blend of racing, entertainment, and charitable spirit, marking the third iteration of the challenge. BBC Radio Lancashire presenter Graham Liver kicked off the festivities with a bang, taking to the starting line in a soapbox cart fashioned after the iconic Delorean from the classic film "Back to the Future." Dressed as the eccentric scientist Doc Brown, Liver was joined by his co-presenter Parin Begum, who showcased a striking NORI brick-themed cart. "What a day and what an event," exclaimed Liver, highlighting the unique charm of the challenge each year. "It's such a fun day out!" The event was made possible through the support of local sponsors, including Hyndburn Borough Council, Accrington and Rossendale College, and Financial Affairs, all of whom played a crucial role in bringing the community together. Beyond the exhilarating races, attendees were treated to a variety of live music and dance performances, enhancing the festive atmosphere. This year's overall winner was the Senator Group, whose cart, aptly named Jeffrey's Jet, not only captured the audience's attention but also raised awareness for Jeffrey's Journey—a cause close to the hearts of many, supporting a colleague's family member battling Battens Disease. Following closely behind, the North Lancs Training Group secured second place with their whimsical Minions-themed cart, while first-time racers Mission Impossible impressively clinched third. The event also celebrated remarkable milestones, such as the participation of 104-year-old Andrew Anderton from Accrington's Royal British Legion, who showcased both courage and enthusiasm as he navigated the course. The best-dressed award went to Stolle Machinery, recognized for their creative beverage can-themed cart and accompanying costumes, further adding to the colorful spectacle. In a poignant nod to current global events, organizers dedicated a portion of the event to honor the 33rd anniversary of Ukraine's independence. This included a Ukrainian-themed soapbox entry, delicious Ukrainian food for attendees, and a vibrant dance performance by a local troupe, showcasing the town's solidarity and support for international communities. With all entry fees directed to local charity Maundy Relief, the organizers aimed to surpass a remarkable total of £10,000 raised since the event's inception in 2018. Councillor Kimberley Whitehead from Hyndburn Borough Council expressed her pride in the event's success, stating, "It brings all areas of the community together to enjoy themselves and to shop local around town." The Accrington Soapbox Challenge has truly become more than just a race; it is a celebration of creativity, community, and charitable giving, leaving participants and attendees excited for what next year's event will bring.
