Prostate cancer has become one of the leading causes of mortality among men in Latin America, with alarming rates reaching 14.5%, according to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). In light of this situation, prevention emerges as a fundamental tool, especially for older adults, who are the most vulnerable to this disease. Regular medical check-ups and adopting healthy habits are essential measures to combat the progression of this pathology. The prostate, although small and the size of a walnut, plays a crucial role in the male reproductive system, as it produces a significant part of the seminal fluid. However, its health can be compromised by factors such as age and genetics, which can lead to the development of malignant cells in this gland. The World Health Organization (WHO) has emphasized the importance of maintaining an active lifestyle and has recommended that men engage in at least 30 minutes of daily exercise to reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer. Various studies have supported this recommendation. The American Cancer Society has stated that physical activity not only prevents several types of cancer but also helps patients cope better with treatments if diagnosed with the disease. In this sense, exercise becomes an essential ally in the fight against cancer, offering benefits that go beyond simple prevention. One of the most recommended exercises is the use of a stationary bike. The Spanish Society of Medical Oncology has noted that consistent physical activity can reduce the risk of developing various types of cancer, including prostate cancer, by up to 30%. This form of exercise has been highlighted for its effectiveness and ease of practice at home, making it an accessible option for many. A study published in the journal Prostate Cancer and Prostatic Diseases has demonstrated that using a stationary bike, especially at high intensity levels, can have a significant impact on the prevention of prostate cancer. In the study, men with advanced-stage disease who engaged in 34 minutes of cycling showed a 17% increase in levels of myokines, proteins that have anticancer properties. This suggests that not only is regular exercise beneficial, but the intensity with which it is practiced also plays a relevant role in the effectiveness of prevention. However, it is important to remember that exercise, while powerful, cannot be considered a panacea. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, which includes quitting smoking and moderating alcohol consumption, is equally crucial to adding layers of protection against prostate cancer. Carlos Núñez, head of the Urological Surgery Service at MD Anderson Cancer Center Madrid, has emphasized the need to be attentive to symptoms that may indicate the presence of this disease. Early detection is vital, and the best way to ensure it is through regular medical check-ups and self-monitoring for any changes in the body. Health education and the promotion of healthy habits should be a priority in awareness campaigns about prostate cancer. Incorporating exercise as part of the daily routine can not only save lives but also improve the quality of life for men at all stages of their lives. Therefore, the combination of regular exercise and appropriate medical check-ups presents itself as a comprehensive strategy to combat prostate cancer. Men should be proactive about their health and adopt a preventive approach that includes exercising, taking care of their diet, and being attentive to signals that may indicate problems with the prostate. The shift towards a healthier lifestyle can be the first step in the fight against this devastating disease, providing a pathway to a healthier and more hopeful future.
