In an exciting match that kept fans on the edge of their seats, Peru's U17 volleyball team secured a place among the top eight teams in the world by defeating Argentina 3-2 in the World Championship taking place in Lima. One of the standout figures in this victory is Ariana Vásquez, the team captain, who at just 15 years old already demonstrates a maturity that inspires both her teammates and fans. In a recent interview, Ariana shared her expectations and reflections on this unique experience. Ariana, originally from Iquitos, has had to leave her home and family to focus on her sports career. Despite the challenges this entails, she feels grateful for the opportunity to represent her country in such a significant tournament. "We are in a sporting event, a celebration. We have to enjoy it, which is something that Coach Rizola tells us: we must enjoy the moment because we won't always have this opportunity," the young player emphasizes, highlighting the importance of living in the present in the world of sports. The captain also reflects on the team's development process. "We've known each other since last year's South American Championship, but more girls have joined this year," she explains. This sense of camaraderie is essential in a sport like volleyball, where synchronization and communication are fundamental to success on the court. Additionally, Ariana mentions that the team has improved in technical, physical, and tactical aspects, stressing the importance of psychological development, especially in a group of young athletes. Ariana was chosen as captain due to her communication skills and her ability to maintain harmony within the team. "If something is not right off the court, it's going to reflect on the field," she comments. This holistic view of leadership shows her commitment not only to her individual performance but also to the well-being and cohesion of the entire group. Regarding expectations for the World Championship, the captain emphasizes the need to maintain a focus on "step by step." "We want to focus on winning one point, then another, and so on, trying to get to 25 to win the set," she explains. This mentality reflects a realistic and strategic approach, characteristic of great competitors who understand that each small achievement is a step toward the ultimate victory. Ariana also shared her experience of moving to Lima to advance her career. "At first, it feels like a sleepover with your cousins, but then you realize your brother, your dad, your mom aren't there," she confesses. Adapting to a new city and being away from her family environment has been a challenge, but she has found support in her uncles, who have welcomed and unconditionally supported her in her new life. The prodigy of Peruvian volleyball does not forget her roots. She fondly recalls her life in Iquitos, where access to friends and social activities was easy. "Everything is close, the club where my friends go, the houses," she says. However, she acknowledges that in Lima, distances are greater and she has had to learn to balance her sports life with her studies and social life. As for her future, Ariana remains cautious. "I prefer to take it step by step and see what comes next. Obviously, I would like to, but we’ll see what happens," she mentions, which reflects an unusual maturity for her age and an understanding that the path in sports can be uncertain and full of surprises. As the World Championship progresses, the Peruvian team, led by Ariana, faces a path filled with challenges. However, with a mindset focused on teamwork and enjoying the game, they are prepared to give their all on the court. Ariana's story and that of her team reflect the potential of youth sports in Peru, and their journey has just begun. With each match, the girls show that they are ready to make history and demonstrate that the future of Peruvian volleyball is in good hands.
