The Cabildo of La Gomera issues an alert for fire risk due to climate instability.

The Cabildo of La Gomera has issued a precautionary warning to the public due to the meteorological instability that has begun to affect the Canary archipelago. In a context where adverse weather conditions have been recorded, the island institution has decided to maintain a level 1 alert for the risk of forest fires, which involves implementing various preventive and restrictive measures within the territory of La Gomera. The island president, Casimiro Curbelo, emphasized the importance of civic responsibility during this critical moment. "It is essential that we all are aware of the risks we face, especially regarding fires. We had two fire outbreaks last weekend, which obliges us to be even more diligent," stated Curbelo. The outbreaks occurred in Chipude and in the El Lamero area, both incidents serving as a clear indication of the island's vulnerability during this period. Héctor Cabrera, the island's emergency councilor, also joined the call for caution. He reminded that the current alert includes a prohibition on making fires in outdoor areas, including bonfires, barbecues, and wood-fired ovens. Additionally, it extends to recreational areas that do not have the necessary safety measures, such as the installation of spark arresters, which are essential to prevent fire spread. The restrictions do not stop there. The burning of plant waste and the use of machinery that may generate sparks are also prohibited, as are fireworks displays in risk areas. These measures aim to protect not only the natural environment of La Gomera but also its inhabitants, whose well-being could be compromised by a forest fire. The climatic situation in the region has been described as unusual, with episodes of high temperatures primarily affecting the midlands and peaks of the island. Temperatures are expected to exceed 30ºC in several locations, which, combined with low relative humidity and drought conditions, creates a favorable environment for the ignition of fires. Moreover, the presence of calima (dust from the Sahara) is anticipated, which could affect visibility in the high areas of the island and exacerbate health problems in people with respiratory conditions. The combination of these meteorological factors underscores the urgency of maintaining constant vigilance and the need for citizens to stay informed about weather conditions and recommendations issued by the authorities. The interaction of meteorological phenomena, such as a subsaharan depression and an easterly wave, has increased instability in the archipelago. This could lead to storms accompanied by scattered showers, adding an additional layer of uncertainty regarding weather behavior in the coming days. In light of this situation, the Cabildo has urged the population to be especially vigilant in the mountains, reminding that any sign of fire should be reported immediately to emergency services.
