Chelsea’s midfield situation remains a point of intrigue as head coach Enzo Maresca confirmed that Conor Gallagher is not part of the main first-team squad currently training ahead of their match against Manchester City on Sunday. The 24-year-old England international is in a state of limbo, having returned to Chelsea after a proposed move to Atletico Madrid fell through. Gallagher was seen at Atletico Madrid's Metropolitano Stadium following Chelsea's acceptance of a £33 million bid from the Spanish club. However, complications arose when a deal involving striker Samu Omorodion going the other way failed to materialize, leaving Atletico without the necessary funds to finalize Gallagher’s signing. This has resulted in Gallagher being recalled to Chelsea, where he is now training separately at the Cobham training ground. Maresca addressed Gallagher’s situation, stating, “Conor is back and training a bit apart. He is doing some medical tests and training, he won't be involved in this game.” He acknowledged the midfielder's ongoing discussions regarding his future, expressing hope that the situation resolves in a way that satisfies all parties involved. The Chelsea head coach also tackled the broader issue of squad management, as the club grapples with an extensive roster of 43 senior players. With Gallagher, Trevoh Chalobah, and Romelu Lukaku being guided by former goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini in their separate training sessions, Maresca emphasized the challenges posed by such a large squad. “We’ve been in America with 28 or 29 players, so it has been quite good managing the squad. The other players are training apart,” he explained. Looking ahead, Maresca hinted at potential incoming transfers, indicating that Chelsea is in pursuit of both Joao Felix and Napoli striker Victor Osimhen. "Hopefully we can bring some players," he remarked, suggesting that the club is actively seeking to bolster its ranks. On the injury front, Maresca confirmed that only Reece James would miss the upcoming match against Manchester City, as he is serving a suspension following a red card received at the end of last season against Brighton. As Chelsea navigates its complex squad dynamics and transfer negotiations, all eyes will be on how the situation evolves, particularly concerning Gallagher’s future at the club.
