The Arequipa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIA) has taken a clear and decisive stance regarding the future of the Majes-Siguas water project, one of the most important for the agricultural and economic development of the region. Julio Cáceres, president of this institution, expressed his support for the project to become part of the management of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (Midagri), highlighting the need for an effective boost to facilitate its comprehensive development. Cáceres emphasized that the goal of the CCIA is to promote initiatives that enable the unblocking of strategic projects like Majes-Siguas, which has faced various obstacles throughout its history. According to the president of the Chamber of Commerce, the intervention of the central government can provide the necessary technical capacity and appropriate budget to carry out this ambitious plan. The Majes-Siguas I and II project is crucial for Arequipa, not only for its water potential but also for the opportunities it offers in terms of agricultural production and job creation. Julio Cáceres stressed that water management must be effective, seeking an administration that benefits all involved sectors and allows for the maximization of available water resources. In a context where regional Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth has been negative, with a decline of 3.2% in the last quarter of 2023, Cáceres is optimistic about the projections for 2024. The president of the CCIA hopes that the region will recover and achieve growth between 2.2% and 2.3% for the second half of next year, which would be an incentive for the local economy. One of the factors that Cáceres considers fundamental for this economic recovery is the generation of value and employment. According to his analysis, projects like Tía María, although controversial, can significantly contribute to the economy of Arequipa by creating direct and indirect jobs and strengthening the region's economic base. Mining activity also plays a prominent role in this context. Cáceres emphasized that mining is the main source of income for Arequipa, representing more than 35% of the regional GDP. In this regard, the port of Matarani has established itself as a strategic point for export, as approximately 18% of the copper concentrate produced worldwide is channeled from there. The president of the CCIA also stressed the importance of business associations and civil society becoming allies of the state to achieve these objectives. Collaboration among different sectors is vital to transform the region's potential into tangible realities that benefit the people of Arequipa. As progress is made in the execution of the Majes-Siguas project, the expectation is that not only agricultural objectives will be achieved, but also improvements in infrastructure and the quality of life for citizens. The CCIA is willing to be a key player in this process, advocating for policies that facilitate sustainable economic growth. However, it is essential to maintain an open dialogue among the various stakeholders involved. The participation of civil society, as well as local farmers and residents, is crucial to ensure that the benefits of the project are distributed equitably and that the environment is respected. In summary, the stance of the Arequipa Chamber of Commerce and Industry reflects a proactive initiative towards the reactivation of the regional economy, placing the importance of the Majes-Siguas project at the center of the discussion and the need for efficient state management to drive its realization. With hopes for a more prosperous future, Arequipa faces new challenges and opportunities that could define its path in the coming years.
