In an effort to minimize environmental risks and improve rural infrastructure, the municipality of Sagunt has launched an ambitious summer program involving 62 laborers and 7 foremen. This initiative, promoted by the Local Agrarian Council and largely funded by the State Public Employment Service (SEPE), aims not only to improve agricultural pathways but also to prevent forest fires and mitigate flooding. With a total budget of 428,294 euros, of which SEPE subsidizes 344,111 euros, the program seeks to promote job insertion while caring for the natural environment. The maintenance brigades have been working in key areas of the municipality, such as the surroundings of the Casa de Penya and the Environmental Education Center of the Valencian Community (CEACV), in addition to the Sant Josep path. Recently, these brigades received a visit from the mayor, Darío Moreno, and Ana María Quesada, president of the Local Agrarian Council, who were able to see firsthand the work being done and the commitment of the workers. Moreno expressed that the actions taken primarily aim to care for the agricultural environment and ensure that the infrastructure used by farmers is in optimal condition. However, the mayor emphasized that the impact of this program goes beyond agriculture, as it also seeks to improve access to different areas of the municipality in case of emergencies. "Safety and efficiency are key in this work," he noted. Ana María Quesada, for her part, highlighted the importance of collaboration between the workers and the Local Agrarian Council, stressing that efficiency in these tasks has increased over the years. "It is essential for the staff to work in safe conditions, both for their own protection and for the conservation of the environment in which they are operating," the president stated. The program focuses on facilitating access to agricultural and forest paths for firefighting resources, allowing for a quicker and more effective response in emergency situations. Additionally, improvements are being made to the signage of the paths, such as the installation of identifying signs and mirrors at dangerous intersections. This year, the employment plan has incorporated new work areas, including the zones adjacent to the Calderona and Rubio/Escales regions. This expands the scope of clearing and cleaning activities, which now include paths such as Povitxol and Isleta, as well as other important routes for connecting rural areas. The work also includes the removal of invasive cane along the banks of irrigation ditches, which is crucial for improving water flow to the sea and reducing the risk of flooding, especially during episodes of heavy rain. This work is essential not only for the safety of the community but also for the preservation of the local ecosystem. Furthermore, specific areas of particular relevance have been identified for the execution of these maintenance tasks, such as the hillside of the Castle and the Roman Theater, the senda dels Lladres, and several municipal forest plots. These actions not only contribute to safety and accessibility but also enhance the natural and cultural beauty of Sagunt. The impact of this program extends beyond mere infrastructure improvement, as it also provides job opportunities to individuals facing difficulties in finding employment. This approach not only strengthens the local economy but also fosters a sense of community and belonging among the workers and the municipality. With the implementation of this plan, Sagunt positions itself as an example of how local initiatives can address environmental and social challenges in an integrated manner, promoting sustainable development and the safety of its inhabitants.
