The Government of the Canary Islands declared a pre-alert situation on Tuesday due to winds across the archipelago, as gusts of wind are expected to reach up to 70 kilometers per hour on the southeastern, western, and northeastern slopes of the larger islands. This measure is being implemented in anticipation of the imminent arrival of adverse weather conditions, expected to begin tonight. The situation is further complicated by existing alerts for high temperatures and coastal phenomena, which have been active since yesterday. The General Directorate of Emergencies also maintains an active alert for the risk of forest fires on the western islands and Gran Canaria. This measure responds to a combination of factors that increase the fire danger, including high temperatures and a significant drought that has affected the archipelago in recent weeks. The community is therefore in a state of maximum vigilance due to the possibility that a small oversight could lead to a large-scale fire. In light of this situation, the authorities have issued a series of recommendations aimed at the population. Emphasis is placed on the importance of exercising extreme caution in mountainous and forested areas. Those who are in the countryside should avoid throwing lit cigarettes and matches, as well as not leaving waste that could be a potential ignition source. In case of detecting smoke in forested areas, the public is urged to report it immediately to 112, as a quick response can be crucial in controlling a fire before it spreads. Additionally, the Government of the Canary Islands has issued warnings about the need to protect oneself from high temperatures. Citizens are advised to avoid going outdoors during the hottest hours of the day and, if it is necessary to do so, to wear light-colored clothing. Recommendations also include the importance of staying well-hydrated and seeking shelter in cool places to mitigate the effects of heat, especially for vulnerable groups such as the elderly and children. Regarding maritime conditions, it is recommended to postpone nautical or sports activities. Authorities have pointed out that swimming at lonely or unmonitored beaches can be extremely dangerous due to increased wave activity. Safety on the coast must be a priority; therefore, people are advised to avoid approaching docks and breakwaters, as well as areas where waves could sweep them away. Wind, for its part, represents another potential hazard on the roads. Drivers are urged to moderate their speed on routes where wind gusts are expected to be moderate to strong. The possibility of objects falling onto the roadway is a real concern in these circumstances, which could lead to accidents. Emergency services are on alert and prepared to respond to any eventuality that may arise due to these weather phenomena. The collaboration and responsibility of citizens are essential to minimize the risks associated with these adverse conditions. The current situation highlights the importance of prevention and environmental education among the population. Awareness of the risk of forest fires, especially during periods of extreme heat and drought, is crucial for safeguarding both human life and the ecosystems of the islands. With the constantly changing weather outlook, authorities insist that the public must stay informed and follow official recommendations. The safety of everyone depends on the community's ability to act responsibly and remain alert to any eventuality that may arise in the coming days.
