In an unprecedented achievement, the Municipality of Arteaga celebrates a full year without forest fires, a remarkable feat especially in a context marked by adverse climatic conditions, such as the prolonged drought affecting various regions of the country. The municipal administration, under the leadership of Mayor Ramiro Durán, has implemented effective strategies that have not only managed to control fire outbreaks but also raised public awareness about the importance of caring for the natural environment. During this time, Arteaga has faced significant challenges, including two fire outbreaks caused by lightning strikes, in which rapid response teams were able to act in a record time of 15 minutes, according to the mayor. "The immediate reaction of our units has been key. Fortunately, we have managed to maintain a clean slate this year," Durán highlighted in a recent statement. Citizen collaboration has been another fundamental pillar of this success. The mayor mentioned that the community has understood the need to enjoy the natural beauty of Arteaga without putting it at risk, avoiding practices such as making campfires in wooded areas. "It reflects shared responsibility. People are more aware, and that has made a big difference," he added. This year without forest fires is not only a milestone for the current administration but also for the history of Arteaga, as there have been no recorded fires of this kind in over 30 years. "I remember that as a child, there were always fires at this time of year, but with the right strategy and a joint effort, we have achieved a significant change," the mayor recalled. However, despite these achievements, Mayor Durán was clear in stating that vigilance must not be lowered. Although recent rains have helped keep the vegetation green, the drought that has plagued the region for five years still poses a risk. "We cannot celebrate victory. The recovery of the aquifers is slow, and we need more rain to ensure the sustainability of our water resources," he emphasized. The current state of the aquifers is concerning, as, according to Durán, it is estimated that at least 200 millimeters of additional rainfall are needed to recover 60% of the aquifers. This underscores the need to continue working on fire prevention and water conservation, as both are vital for the well-being of the local ecosystem. Throughout the year, the municipal government has implemented various measures, including the creation of substations and the formation of ranger brigades, which have been effective in intervening quickly in any fire-related incidents. The proactivity of these units has been crucial in preventing an outbreak from turning into a large-scale forest fire. The commitment of the Arteaga administration to environmental protection has been evident in every action taken. From awareness campaigns to improving infrastructure for fire response, it has been demonstrated that efficient management can yield positive and lasting results. This achievement is not only a cause for celebration for the residents of Arteaga but also serves as a model for other municipalities facing similar challenges. The collaboration between local government and the community has proven to be an effective strategy for protecting natural resources and ensuring the safety of the environment. With a year without forest fires to its credit, Arteaga stands as an example of how prevention, education, and coordinated action can make a difference in environmental conservation. However, the path to sustainability is far from over; it is essential to maintain commitment and vigilance to ensure that this historic achievement endures over time.
