The rare sighting of a kelp gull at Grafham Water for the third consecutive year has sparked excitement among birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts alike. The reservoir, managed by Anglian Water, continues to be a noteworthy destination for avian observations, with this year’s sighting drawing particular attention. Matthew Rodgers, a dedicated birdwatcher since the 1970s, captured a remarkable photograph of the gull on Tuesday. His longstanding passion for birdwatching has made him an invaluable resource within the local community, and he expressed his enthusiasm for the rare species’ return. “This bird was actually here two years ago and briefly turned up last year just for one morning,” Rodgers remarked. “We were hoping it might call in again at Grafham, and sure enough it has.” The kelp gull, known for its distinctive black back and wings, is not a common sighting in the UK, with very little white in the feathers that adorn its wings during flight. Its presence in England is so rare that its first appearance at Grafham Water in 2022 was detailed as "one of the more amazing records to reach Britain" by the British Bird Rarities Committee. This accolade has only heightened the interest surrounding the species. Anglian Water, which oversees the management of Grafham Water, expressed its delight at the sighting. A spokesperson stated, “We are thrilled to see the kelp gull returning to Grafham Water. The reservoir provides a rich habitat for various bird species and we encourage birdwatchers to visit and enjoy the natural beauty we have to offer.” The return of the kelp gull not only brings joy to birdwatchers like Rodgers but also reinforces the importance of preserving natural habitats for wildlife. As sightings of rare species become more infrequent, the presence of such a unique bird at Grafham Water serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between nature and human interaction. The community looks forward to welcoming the gull for as long as it chooses to stay, fostering a deeper appreciation for the rich biodiversity found in this beloved location.
