The Environment, Housing, and Land Planning Department of Castilla y León has declared an alert for the risk of forest fires during the days of August 9, 10, and 11. This decision is based on a significant increase in temperatures and a decrease in relative humidity levels, conditions that raise the likelihood of ignition and the spread of fires in the region. The alert has been issued in response to a special notice from the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), which warns of a heatwave expected to affect the entire community. According to AEMET forecasts, a ridge at mid-levels is anticipated to develop during these days, contributing to a situation of atmospheric stability characterized by clear skies and high insolation. This meteorological phenomenon will not only raise maximum and minimum temperatures but will also worsen the humidity conditions of the vegetation fuel, a crucial factor in the prevention of forest fires. The Castilla y León Forest Fire Prevention and Extinction Operational Plan (INFOCAL) has concurred with AEMET in its assessment, considering that the forecasted meteorological conditions will generate a considerable increase in fire risk. In light of this alarming situation, the Department has decided to implement extraordinary preventive and organizational measures to address the heightened danger. Among the measures adopted, lighting fires in the woods is prohibited in any type of open space, including recreational and camping areas, even in those locations that are normally permitted for such activities. This prohibition extends to the use of barbecues in open spaces, as well as within a 400-meter perimeter around such areas. Additionally, the resolution also restricts the use of machinery that may generate sparks or electrical discharges, such as blowtorches, welders, and angle grinders. This prohibition applies equally in the woods and in the 400-meter strip surrounding it, with the aim of minimizing any risk of accidental ignition. The Department has called on the public to exercise extreme caution and stay informed about the weather conditions. It is essential for the residents of Castilla y León to be aware of the seriousness of the situation and to act responsibly to avoid endangering both people and the natural environment. The combination of high temperatures and low humidity is a perfect recipe for rapid forest fire development. Previous years' stories have shown that, in similar situations, the speed at which a fire can spread is alarming. For this reason, authorities are determined to act preventively and adopt all necessary measures to safeguard both human life and the region's biodiversity. Fire alerts serve as a reminder of the importance of prevention in our relationship with nature. Citizens must be educated on how their actions can impact the environment, and authorities must continue working on campaigns that promote awareness and respect for natural spaces. The work of firefighting teams is vital in emergency situations, but prevention is always the best tool. If all citizens act responsibly and are aware of the restrictions and recommendations, it is possible to mitigate the risk of fires and protect one of the community's most valuable resources: its forests.
