Gladys Tejeda, the prominent Peruvian marathon runner, is in the final stretch of her preparation for what will be her fourth Olympic Games in Paris 2024. With experience that spans from her debut in London 2012 to her participations in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020, Tejeda is optimistic and determined to push her own limits. In a recent interview, the athlete shared her expectations and the difference she feels this time compared to her previous Olympic experiences. For Tejeda, the Paris Games represent a renewed opportunity to showcase her ability and talent. "These Games will be different," she stated, referring to how the pandemic complicated her participation in Tokyo. Unlike that experience, where the context affected her performance, she now feels more prepared and in tune with her body. "I have worked much better to give it my all," she confidently affirmed. The marathon is a sport that demands not only physical endurance but also considerable mental strength. Tejeda acknowledges that, although the competition is intense, especially with the dominance shown by African athletes, her focus and preparation are what keep her confident. "Peru will be very well represented in Paris 2024," she assured, highlighting her honor in representing her country at such a significant event. Her preparation has been meticulous and has included training camps in various climatic conditions, from Kenya to the United States. "I am in a very hot place, which has helped me adapt," she commented about her training in Arizona, where she has managed to structure her work plan to culminate in the marathon. She has prioritized her health and well-being, avoiding any injuries that could interfere with her performance in the competition. This focus has been key to her mental tranquility. "60% is training and 40% is mental," Tejeda explained, emphasizing the importance of being in an appropriate psychological state. This is especially relevant in marathons, where physical fatigue can test athletes' willpower. Her goal, she asserts, is to cross the finish line giving her best and leaving everything on the track. According to Tejeda, the marathon is an event that challenges her with every kilometer. Aware of the demands of running 42 kilometers, she is clear in remembering that the competition is designed to bring out the best in the athlete. “I have worked to face my best version,” she emphasized, convinced that her effort will lead to a good performance. Looking ahead, Tejeda has clear objectives beyond Paris 2024. She considers the possibility of participating in the Pan American Games in Lima 2027 and is open to the idea of continuing to compete even in Los Angeles 2028. "Anything is possible and depends on how one arrives," she reflected on the idea of extending her athletic career. When asked about the significance of being the first Peruvian to qualify for an Olympic marathon, Tejeda expressed pride. Every step she has taken in her career has been a testament to her perseverance and dedication. As the competition date approaches, she also feels the support of her family, which provides her with additional strength. Finally, her message to other Peruvian athletes who will be in Paris is clear: "I am very proud to be part of Team Peru." The journey to the Olympic Games is not easy, and Tejeda knows that each of her teammates has sacrificed a lot to achieve their dreams. With her eyes set on the finish line, Gladys Tejeda prepares to give her best in Paris, not only for herself but for everyone who has supported her along the way.
