Mónica Gallese de Osma has captured the attention not only of the fashion world but also of the Peruvian patriotic spirit by being selected to design the uniforms for the Peruvian delegation that will participate in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Her story, marked by effort, passion, and dedication, reveals the deep connection between culture and identity in the realm of sports. The proposal to design the uniforms came to Mónica through a competitive process in which several designers presented their ideas. “When they called me and told me, I almost cried,” the designer shares with emotion. This moment undoubtedly marked a turning point in her career, a challenge she accepted with pride and an unwavering commitment to her country. However, the journey has not been without difficulties. The most significant challenges Mónica faced were time constraints, a limited budget, and strict guidelines that she had to follow. With just two and a half months to produce 111 kits totaling around 1,500 pieces, the pressure was immense. “At the beginning, I tried to call the factories I know to get the fabrics and ask them for support. I received a lot of backing,” Mónica comments, highlighting the solidarity she found in the local industry. The guidelines were clear from the start: the design had to reflect the colors of the national flag, red and white, and adhere to certain parameters regarding the placement of logos and sizes. This led Mónica to modify her initial proposal, which was bolder and more modern, to align with what was sought in terms of functionality and national representation. “I wanted something that wasn’t as literal as what is commonly seen in Marca Perú, and it is a challenge to create something unique,” she adds. The inspiration for the designs comes from the rich Peruvian culture. Mónica aimed to avoid clichés, opting for an approach that highlights national identity through more subtle and contemporary elements. Additionally, all the fabrics used are produced locally, reflecting a commitment not only to design but also to local labor, which is a key aspect of her work. With over twelve years of experience in the fashion industry, Mónica has developed her career in Paris, where she created her own brand, Fortuna, and a multi-brand store called Isidra. This new challenge of designing the Olympic uniforms becomes a milestone in her professional journey, a task she describes not only as a challenge but also as an honor: “It is a pride to design for Peru, something I never imagined I would experience.” Among the pieces she has created, Mónica highlights two favorites: the windbreaker jacket with a retro design that incorporates elements of indigenous culture, and a red blazer that has generated great interest, although it will not be for sale. The combination of tradition and modernity is manifested in every detail, showcasing the richness of Peruvian heritage. The anticipation of seeing the Peruvian delegation wearing her designs in Paris is a mix of intense emotions for Mónica. Adrenaline, happiness, and a touch of stress intertwine as the moment she has long awaited approaches. “I decided to buy my ticket to Paris so I wouldn’t miss the Olympic celebration and see the athletes wearing my pieces,” she confesses. As a sports enthusiast, Mónica also plans to enjoy the competitions, especially gymnastics, a discipline she has practiced since childhood. Her love for sports is reflected not only in her work but also in her desire to connect with the athletes and the spectacle that the Olympic Games represent. Mónica Gallese de Osma is an example of how art and identity can find a point of convergence in world-renowned events. Through her work, not only is Peruvian fashion projected on the international stage, but also a message of unity and national pride. The story behind the "red jacket" is undoubtedly one of perseverance and passion that will resonate in the hearts of all Peruvians during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
