This Sunday, the old road from Huesca to Yéqueda became the scene of a wildfire that has put local authorities and emergency services on alert. The fire broke out around 1 PM, threatening a high-tension tower in the area, which prompted firefighters from the Huesca City Council to act quickly to contain it. The flames, which reached heights of up to four meters, approached dangerously close to the base of the electrical installation, leading to a request for the power supply to be cut off by the company Endesa as a preventive measure. The fire was detected and reported by the 112 emergency service of Aragón, which alerted firefighting teams. Given the magnitude of the fire, firefighters deployed two attack lines to confront the flames, which were spreading on two different fronts. To ensure the effectiveness of the operation, a water supply truck was mobilized to support the firefighting efforts, which was essential for controlling the situation. The Aragón wildfire prevention and extinguishing operation, known as Infoar, was responsible for reviewing the perimeter of the fire and conducting brush clearing work on adjacent plots to reduce the risk of spread. Meanwhile, firefighters concentrated their efforts on extinguishing the active hotspots within the affected property, which was crucial to prevent the fire from spreading further. As the firefighting teams managed to control the blaze, the water supply truck was withdrawn, followed by a forestry truck dedicated to nature protection, which ensured the safety of the area after extinguishing the fire. In total, three firefighters, an officer, and a deputy intervention chief were mobilized, combining efforts to contain the incident and minimize damage. Fortunately, authorities have confirmed that there are no homes in the vicinity of the fire, which has helped avoid a greater tragedy. However, the cause of the fire remains unknown, as does the affected area. Initial estimates suggest that the plot is not large, which could limit the impact of the incident. The extreme weather and drought conditions in the region have led the General Directorate of Forestry Management of the Government of Aragón to declare a Red Alert level for wildfire danger in six critical areas of the autonomous community. These areas include Moncayo and Aranda, the Jalón Depression, the Central Iberian Mountains, Somontano Sur, Beceite Ports, and the Lower Ebro Forest, highlighting the need to maintain vigilance and safety protocols in the face of the risk of new fires. Wildfires are a recurring problem in Aragón, especially during the summer months, when high temperatures and lack of rainfall increase the risk of fire in natural environments. In this context, it is crucial for both authorities and citizens to stay informed about weather conditions and to follow safety recommendations to prevent emergency situations. It is essential for the public to be aware of the importance of respecting regulations in forest areas, as well as reporting any suspicious activity that could cause a fire. Community collaboration is key to protecting our forests and ecosystems, which are vital for biodiversity and environmental balance. The rapid response of firefighters and coordination with the emergency service are aspects that should be highly valued in situations like this. As the wildfire season progresses, preparedness and prevention will continue to be essential tools for safeguarding the safety of the population and the natural environment in Aragón. It serves as a reminder that the care and protection of our natural resources are the responsibility of all.
