The recent arrest of Joaquín Guzmán López and Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada has generated a whirlwind of reactions within the Mexican government, which finds itself at a crossroads of information and misinformation regarding the developments of this operation. A week after their capture, Mexican authorities still lack details about the maneuver that led to their detention by the United States, raising questions about transparency and coordination between the two countries. The government has dismissed the version that indicated Guzmán López and Zambada had left Sonora on a flight, stating that the information regarding their departure from the state is not true. This clarification comes amidst a series of rumors and speculations that, according to authorities, deserve to be approached with caution. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has emphasized the importance of waiting to gather all necessary information before making definitive statements. During a recent press conference, the Mexican leader insisted that it is essential to remain calm and not rush to issue judgments or conclusions. “Friends deserve patience,” he remarked, alluding to the bilateral relationship with the United States and the need to give U.S. authorities time to share relevant information about the case. This statement reflects a more diplomatic than critical approach, indicating that there is still no clarity on whether there was a prior agreement between the parties involved in the operation. In an ironic tone, López Obrador mentioned that if the U.S. government was taking its time to communicate details, it could be that they were "thinking it over." However, he reiterated that justice, while slow, eventually arrives. This phrase seems to be an attempt to maintain public confidence in the justice system and in the security of the region, which, according to him, has remained calm following the arrests. The president also highlighted the importance of peace in the region where Guzmán López and Zambada operated. He assured that no significant violent incidents have been recorded since the detention of both, which would indicate that the situation might be under control, at least temporarily. This point is crucial, as any escalation of violence could have severe repercussions on the civilian population. Despite the tensions, López Obrador assured that the relationship with the United States remains good, although he acknowledged that the situation surrounding the arrests has much to do with the functioning of the U.S. government. He referenced previous situations, such as the Odebrecht case, suggesting that there are precedents of cooperation and, at times, disorganization between the two countries. The president also addressed the role of the National Intelligence Center (CNI) in this operation, defending its integrity and asserting that it was not a failure of Mexican institutions, as the government was not involved in the operation that led to the arrests. This seems to be an attempt to distance the Mexican government from any responsibility that might arise from the lack of information. However, the lack of clarity in handling the case has opened the door to interpretations and contradictory versions. López Obrador urged not to blindly believe all the versions circulating, suggesting that many may be based on rumors or political agendas that do not benefit Mexico or its citizens. In the end, the Mexican leader called for honesty and transparency, emphasizing that the government has an obligation to inform the Mexican people without hiding anything. This commitment to act with honesty is a central element of his administration, although the reality of the fight against drug trafficking and organized crime presents complex and ongoing challenges. The lingering question is to what extent these events will affect the power dynamics in organized crime in Mexico and how the government will respond in the future to similar situations. Meanwhile, the population continues to await clear and decisive answers on a matter that has marked the political and security agenda of the country.
