La Pampilla refinery, one of the main fuel production plants in Peru, has announced a significant 20% increase in gasoline production, both regular and premium, after completing an ambitious maintenance and improvement plan at its facilities in Ventanilla, Callao. This investment not only translates into an increase in the supply of cleaner fuels but also reinforces the company's commitment to sustainability and industrial safety. Julián de la Calle, Refining Director at Repsol Peru, highlighted that this result is the outcome of a year of meticulous work and more than 480,000 man-hours dedicated to the improvement of the refinery. "Our goal has been clear: to develop a safe and efficient productive environment in the country," he stated during a recent announcement. The maintenance carried out is considered the most important shutdown in the plant's history, with a special focus on safety training. The refinery achieved a remarkable milestone by accumulating 62,000 hours of training in this area, successfully meeting the objective of zero accidents during the process. More than 1,200 people from 42 specialized companies worked together to carry out these improvements. In addition to the increase in gasoline production, the company emphasizes that this effort is also a response to the need to ensure the supply of quality fuels and reduce dependence on imports. According to La Pampilla, this expansion not only enhances the country's energy self-sufficiency but also contributes to reducing the carbon footprint due to the production of fuels with a lower sulfur content. Recently, in July, the refinery initiated a technological project to optimize its processes, investing around 1.3 million dollars in the installation of a new pump that will operate on electric power. This initiative aims not only to improve operational efficiency but also to decrease carbon dioxide emissions, in line with global trends toward sustainability. With the completion of these investments, La Pampilla has allocated a total of 7.7 million dollars in the first quarter of 2024, of which 4.4 million has been directed towards increasing the production of low-sulfur gasoline and 3.1 million towards other safety and facility improvements. These efforts are part of a broader commitment by the company to innovate and adapt to market demands and environmental regulations. However, despite these improvements, the refinery's operational results showed a slight decline in sales, which decreased by 4.9% in value compared to the same period last year. This drop is mainly attributed to a 4.7% reduction in fuel prices, influenced by lower international quotations. Nevertheless, there was a 0.3% increase in sales volume, driven primarily by an 11.7% rise in national sales. On the other hand, gasoline exports suffered a significant decline of 44.1%, raising questions about the refinery's competitiveness in the international market. This context suggests that, despite the increase in production and improvements in infrastructure, the company still faces challenges in the dynamics of foreign trade. La Pampilla continues to work on implementing strategies that will allow it not only to address these difficulties but also to establish itself as a benchmark in sustainable fuel production in the region. With an eye on the future, the company appears determined to continue investing in technology and training its personnel, thereby reaffirming its commitment to the energy development of Peru.
