María Belén Bazo is at a crucial moment in her career as a sailor, less than a month away from the competition at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. From Marseille, where she has established her training base, the young Peruvian athlete has enthusiastically shared her expectations and preparation. In a context where pressure is part of the game, Bazo has opted for a more relaxed approach, seeking to enjoy the Olympic experience while striving to give her best. The athlete, who already participated in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, recalls the challenges of competing at that time. Despite finishing in 13th place, the best result for a Peruvian in Olympic history, the experience left a significant mark on her. Transitioning to a new class, the iQFOiL, has presented an additional challenge but also an opportunity for growth. "It was a different class. I had trained for it my whole life. Now, without that pressure, I feel more relaxed and ready to compete," Bazo states. Bazo's training has been rigorous and meticulous. Since her arrival in Marseille a month ago, she has been practicing in the same location where the competitions will take place, allowing her to familiarize herself with the specific sea conditions. The sailor has been training alongside competitors from different countries, enriching her preparation. "We have been training starts, maneuvers, and all kinds of specific drills. The practice regatta was very good for us," she enthusiastically comments. Qualifying for Paris 2024 was not easy, and Bazo shares that at first, she felt sadness and confusion when she did not qualify at the expected moment. However, once her participation was confirmed after another competitor declined, her excitement about being in the Olympic Games was overwhelming. "I was super happy and excited to be able to participate in these games," she notes, revealing her gratitude for the opportunity presented to her. As the competition date approaches, the sailor feels more prepared and with a renewed mindset. The experience gained in Tokyo and other competitions has taught her that the pressure to achieve results can be counterproductive. "It doesn’t help to pressure yourself and get nervous. I’m ready to give my best," she explains, emphasizing her desire to enjoy every moment of this unique experience. The dream of winning a medal remains alive, but now Bazo's perspective is different. She feels more confident and has a better attitude, which she considers essential for facing the competition. "I think that will help me a lot in fighting for that goal," she asserts with determination. Her love for sailing and her desire to improve are her main motivations in this adventure. In addition to her focus on competition, Bazo does not forget the importance of family support. Her father and brother are with her in Marseille, providing her with a sense of closeness and additional motivation. "I hope there are more Peruvians supporting me. The backing of the public is always important," she mentions, highlighting her desire to feel the warmth of her compatriots during the competition. Regarding Team Peru, Bazo is optimistic. With only three representatives in sailing, she trusts in the capabilities of her teammates, such as Stefano Peschiera and Florencia Chiarella. "I feel that we are well prepared and can perform well. There is a lot of excitement to represent our country," she assures, reflecting the competitive spirit that characterizes Peruvian athletes. As the competition approaches, Bazo's story intertwines with that of other Peruvian athletes, creating a narrative of effort, overcoming, and hope. In a context where pressure can be overwhelming, her focus on enjoying the experience serves as a reminder that, beyond the results, every moment lived at the Olympic Games is a gift. With a renewed attitude and a heart full of motivation, María Belén Bazo prepares to face the challenge of Paris 2024, dreaming of achieving new goals and leaving an indelible mark on the history of Peruvian sport.
