The Government of Catalonia has issued an alarm about an extreme risk of forest fires affecting 131 municipalities in 15 counties starting this Tuesday. The Generalitat, through a statement, has raised the level of the Alfa Plan to 4 in these localities, which entails a series of preventive measures to mitigate the risk of fires in a context where high temperatures and extremely low humidity predict an environment conducive to the spread of fire. Level 4 of the Alfa Plan implies significant restrictions in five natural areas of the community: the Montsant mountain range, the Tivissa-Vandellòs mountains, the Cardó-el Boix mountains, Baronia de Rialb, and Ribera Salada, the latter affected for the first time. These restrictions aim to reduce the risk of fire and ensure the safety of individuals, preventing them from being in vulnerable situations in the event of a fire. With the activation of level 4, which will take effect from midnight on Tuesday, the Rural Agents will focus exclusively on the prevention of forest fires. Additionally, aerial surveillance in these natural areas will be increased to facilitate a rapid response in case a fire breaks out. It is noteworthy that an additional 212 municipalities, covering 25 counties, have been classified at level 3 of the Alfa Plan, indicating a very high risk of forest fire. In these areas, all activities that could generate a risk of fire, such as lighting fires in open spaces or using pyrotechnic materials, will be prohibited. This measure extends to a zone of 500 meters around forested land. The Generalitat calls on citizens to take extra precautions during this critical period. It is advised to avoid risky activities and limit the frequency of visits to forested areas and natural spaces, especially those areas that receive more sunlight during the day. The combination of extreme heat and dryness in the environment increases the likelihood of a fire spreading rapidly. The Meteorological Service of Catalonia has forecasted that the heatwave will persist at least until Wednesday, July 31, further aggravating the situation. In light of this threat, the Bombers de la Generalitat are preparing to mobilize additional personnel, who will be available to respond in case of an emergency. The impact of forest fires is not only devastating for flora and fauna but also has long-term consequences on the environment and local communities. Prevention is key to avoiding such disasters, and the Government's measures are a necessary response to the climate emergency facing the region. The history of fires in Catalonia has left difficult lessons, and the activation of the Infocat Plan is a sign that the Government is taking serious measures to protect both the population and the ecosystem. Citizen collaboration is essential, as vigilance and respect for restrictions can make a difference in preventing these disasters. The current situation is a reminder of the destructive power of forest fires, exacerbated by adverse weather conditions. It is crucial for all citizens to stay informed and follow the recommendations of the authorities to avoid putting their lives and those of others at risk, as well as the integrity of a natural heritage that is vital for future generations.
