The president of the Congress, Alejandro Soto Reyes, has expressed his discontent with the Peruvian National Police (PNP) for the unconsulted removal of the gates that protected the front of the Congress of the Republic on Av. Abancay. According to Soto Reyes, this measure was taken without prior coordination, which could put at risk the security of the congressmen, the Congress staff, and the facilities of the National Parliament, especially in the context of the upcoming celebrations for Independence Day and possible demonstrations. During the session of the Permanent Commission on July 24, the president of the Congress made it clear that he disassociated himself from any responsibility for potential incidents that may arise as a consequence of the removal of the gates. Likewise, he instructed the Chief Officer of the Congress to send a letter to the general commander of the PNP to express his concern and demand explanations about this decision. On his part, José Cueto, representative of the Honor and Democracy caucus, pointed out that although there was a police presence in the area of the Congress, the security gates were not observed. Faced with this situation, Soto Reyes reiterated his position that the removal of the gates was carried out unilaterally and without coordination, arguing that it was done in order to improve the visual aspect of the avenue. The president of the Congress questioned the lack of uniformity in the implemented security measures, referring to the situation at the Government Palace and questioning whether the gates had also been removed there. Soto Reyes emphasized his responsibility to guarantee security in the Congress and assured that he will continue to ensure the proper protection of the parliamentary facilities. In another context, the Congress appointed César Aguilar Surichaqui as the new Comptroller General, amid tensions between the Executive and the current head of the Comptroller's Office, Nelson Shack. This appointment took place during a closed-door session of the Permanent Commission, without access for the press, which has generated criticisms and questions about the transparency in this selection process. In conclusion, the controversy generated by the removal of the security gates at the front of the Congress highlights the importance of coordination and dialogue among the competent authorities to ensure the protection of the institutions and those who work in them. Likewise, the appointment of the new Comptroller General in a context of conflict between branches of government reflects the need to strengthen control and oversight mechanisms to ensure efficient and transparent public management.
