The Minister of Defense of Venezuela, Vladimir Padrino López, made statements on Tuesday affirming that the Bolivarian National Armed Forces (FANB) will be present to protect the Constitution and popular sovereignty during the presidential elections on July 28. In a message on social media, Padrino López stated that the military institution has always fulfilled this mission and reiterated that they will not hesitate to defend these fundamental principles for the country. Amid speculations and questions about the stance the FANB will take in the elections, the minister was clear in pointing out that they will follow the course of the popular will expressed through the National Electoral Council (CNE). He also urged the candidates to respect the results, with a direct message: "The winner assumes office; the loser steps aside. That is the premise." Padrino López also denounced the pressure exerted by extremist sectors of the opposition that seek to influence the FANB and lead it into schemes that do not serve national interests, but external agendas. In this sense, he called for coherence and maintaining institutionalism in a crucial moment for Venezuelan democracy. On the other hand, President Nicolás Maduro has reiterated his confidence in the support of the FANB and civilian and police forces ahead of the presidential elections. Maduro, running for reelection, expressed confidence in his victory and highlighted the support received from the population and the armed forces, elements he considers crucial for his continuation in power. In contrast to the official stance, the candidate of the Democratic Unity Platform (PUD), Edmundo González Urrutia, has promised a modernization of the FANB in case of coming to power, emphasizing the importance of the armed forces respecting the sovereign will of the people expressed through the ballot box. This message aims to generate confidence and guarantees in an electoral process that has sparked various expectations and tensions in the nation. The Constitution of Venezuela clearly establishes that the Armed Forces must be a professional institution, without political affiliation, and at the exclusive service of the nation. In this context, it is essential to respect democratic principles and ensure transparency in the elections, to avoid any attempt of manipulation or interference in the will of the Venezuelan people. Amid a polarized political scenario and an atmosphere of uncertainty, the role of the Venezuelan Armed Forces becomes crucial in preserving stability and peace in the country. It is crucial that the military maintain their commitment to institutionalism and the defense of the fundamental rights of the citizenry, avoiding any type of intervention that could jeopardize democracy and popular sovereignty. In this context, Venezuelan society and the international community will be attentive to the development of the presidential elections on July 28, hoping that the popular will is respected and a fair and transparent electoral process is guaranteed. The Venezuelan Armed Forces face the challenge of demonstrating their commitment to democracy and legitimacy, acting impartially and respecting the sovereign will of the people they swore to protect.
